Osteopathic manual practice is not the same as massage therapy, physiotherapy, or chiropractic care — even though they are all hands-on health disciplines. 💡

Each profession has a distinct philosophy, scope of practice, and clinical approach. Osteopathic manual practitioners work from the principle that each person is an integrated whole and that structure and function are inseparable. Treatment addresses the whole person, not just the presenting complaint.

Osteopathy has a 150-year history and its roots are more fascinating than most people realize. ⚡

In 1864, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still lost 3 children to meningitis and pneumonia. This loss spurred an innate desire to study health and disease through the lens of human anatomy. He spent years studying the relationships of blood, lymph, nerves and fascia in relation to the moving parts of our skeletons; our joints. Dr. Still developed the foundational concepts of modern osteopathy 10 years later, in 1874, and founded the American School of Osteopathy in 1892. This discipline spread to Canada and Europe within a generation, by word of mouth!

"Osteopath" and "osteopathic manual practitioner" are not the same thing — and in Ontario, the distinction is legally significant. 💡

In Ontario, the title "osteopath" is legally restricted to members of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. OAO members are osteopathic manual practitioners — highly trained manual therapy specialists who practice osteopathic principles through hands-on assessment and treatment.

Understanding this distinction helps you make more informed decisions about your care — and protects you from misleading credentials.

What does it take to regulate a healthcare profession in Ontario? More than most people realize. 🎯

Regulation requires sustained government engagement, credible evidence of risk to the public that regulation would mitigate, organized professional representation, and a clear framework for training standards and complaint resolution. The OAO has been building that case through submissions, advocacy, and national and international collaboration since 1999.

Every step forward is a step toward safer, more accountable osteopathic manual care for Ontarians.
