For individuals without a prior clinical background, an OAO-recognized program requires a minimum of 4,200 hours of study — including at least 1,000 hours of supervised, hands-on palpation training from a skilled osteopathic manual practitioner. These benchmarks are drawn directly from the World Health Organization's guidelines for safe osteopathic practice.

In Ontario, osteopathic manual practice is not yet regulated which means there is currently no government body overseeing who can practice as an osteopathic manual practitioner or what standards they must meet.

The OAO exists to fill that gap. Through our Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice, and ongoing advocacy for regulation with the government of Ontario, we provide the accountability structure that protects both patients and practitioners while formal regulation is pursued. 💡

Informed patients are empowered patients. Understanding the landscape is the first step. Select a properly trained practitioner for your care.

Osteopathic manual practitioners are not osteopaths and in Ontario, that distinction is more than semantic. 💡

The title "osteopath" is legally restricted in Ontario to members of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. OAO members are Osteopathic Manual Practitioners — highly trained specialists in hands-on assessment and treatment who have completed rigorous programs based on World Health Organization benchmarks.

Understanding this distinction helps you navigate the healthcare system with confidence and find the right provider for your needs.

Building on the Canadian study, "a national cross-sectional survey of the attitudes, skills and use of evidence-based practice amongst Canadian osteopathic practitioners", we explored findings from six countries that have also completed the survey. The results from Australia, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the UK help to contextualize a better understanding of how practitioners engage with Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) globally.
