Emily's House Annual Garden Memorial 2026 - Photo Album
By Emily Briggson, Paediatric and Family Grief & Bereavement Coordinator

This year's Garden Memorial at Emily's House was memorable for many reasons. Despite the continuous downpour of rain (and even thunder at one point!), more families and supportive loved ones showed up to remember and honour their children than ever before. Thankfully, we were able to gather under tents for our program that included stories from two Emily's House moms, reflections from staff, and music accompanied by the day's rainy percussion sounds. Volunteers supported our families with umbrellas during our naming ceremony as each child's stone found its way back into our garden. As the rain continued, families and friends came together to create a space under the tents to spend time together. This powerful opportunity to share stories and grieve together was well worth the efforts to stay dry. Our families continue to amaze us as the work to care for, remember, and honour their children persists. We at Emily's House are grateful for the opportunity to witness and support the community these families have built with each other as they return year after year, rain or shine.

Thank you to the volunteers and staff who welcomed and hosted families and loved ones on this special day.

HPCO’s 6th Biennial Ontario Paediatric Palliative Care Symposium

Members of our Emily Team recently participated in the Paediatric Symposium – as presenters, “lightening talks”/poster subject matter experts, and best practice learners.

Sandy Broad, our Spiritual Care Practitioner, participated on a featured panel of Spiritual Care providers, titled: Embracing Spirituality at End of Life: A Toolbox for Compassionate Care. In the workshop they explored meaning making through spiritual and religious practices, customs, and beliefs at end of life.

Emily’s House Digital Yearbook / Video 2025 … (our first ever!)

Emily’s House children’s hospice created our first digital yearbook of arts, crafts, experiences, community outings, celebrations and programming, with the many beaming faces of children who participated in recreational respite throughout the 2025 calendar year. Inspired by a Kiwanis Club of Toronto Foundation Arts and Culture Grant 2025, this four-minute video serves as a fun keepsake of memories for children and families to look back on the previous year.

Memories included: messy art, story times, music therapy, a siblings noon year’s eve party, cheering on soccer games, arts and crafts, balloon play, Valentine’s cards, March Break camp, outdoor outings in the community, visits to Riverdale Park, Mother’s Day, Snoezelen sensory therapeutic play, a celebrity visit from our favourite Maple Leafs hockey player John Tavares, wheelchair swing fun, bongos, beanbag chairs, costume parties, the annual visit from the firemen, Emily’s House Explores, riding the TTC, Hats on for Paediatric Palliative Care Day, board games with peers, more arts and crafts for every season, Hike for Hospice, a therapy dog visit, sightseeing, craft painting, and the family holiday party….

Thanks to everyone who contributes to the memories that fill a year – or a moment – for an Emily’s House child, and lifts up their family with some joy and compassionate care.

Special thanks to The Lillian Meighen and Don Wright Foundation for being the Lead Donor Patron for Emily’s House Daily Play and Recreation since 2016!

National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21st

Peace, health and community to everyone as we welcome summer solstice this Sunday and celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day.

For the land and lasting contributions they have shared, we are grateful.

We would like to also take this opportunity to acknowledge that the land, on which Emily’s House and Philip Aziz Centre operate, has for thousands of years been the traditional lands of the Huron-Wendat and Petun First Nations, the Seneca, and most recently, part of the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit River. We are grateful for the opportunity to share this land in providing palliative care for adults, children and their families.
