Many people assume that strong attraction is always a sign of compatibility.

In therapy, we often explore another possibility: that what feels powerful may actually feel familiar.

When early relationships involved inconsistency, criticism, emotional distance, or unpredictability, similar dynamics can feel compelling in adulthood—not because they're healthy, but because they're known.

This doesn't mean you're choosing unhealthy relationships on purpose.

It means your nervous system may be responding to what it learned long ago.

Healing often involves learning to tolerate relationships that feel safe, steady, and mutual, even when they don't create the same emotional intensity.

If a relationship takes work, does that mean something is wrong?

Many people assume healthy relationships should feel effortless all the time.

The reality is that secure relationships are built through consistent effort:

communicating openly, repairing after conflict, showing up for each other, and continuing to choose the relationship even when life gets busy or hard.

Ease can be a sign of security—but security itself is often built through intention and care.

Self-compassion matters most when you're hurting.

Instead of responding to mistakes or struggles with harsh self-criticism, consider what it would look like to respond with understanding and support.

This doesn't mean ignoring challenges, it means facing them without turning against yourself.
