August 1st is observed as Emancipation Day, marking when the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect across the British Empire.
This milestone carries historical and cultural significance; honoured today through activities that pay tribute to the ancestors who endured and resisted, while celebrating the courage and perseverance of Black communities. Emancipation Day is both a reminder of the past and prompt to the ongoing work required towards justice. With recognition of the ongoing impacts, we must, individually and collectively, address and confront systems that continue to perpetuate anti-Black racism.
Guided by the principles of equity and social justice, PQWCHC centers and supports initiatives that enhance the health and well-being of Black communities. In its inaugural year, the PQWCHC Black Health Collective, a staff-led group dedicated to fostering dedicated spaces for African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) community members, facilitated 5 programs engaging over 80 individuals and organizations. The programming centers ACB experiences and responds directly to community needs, with a continued commitment to growing the impact in the years ahead.
