We’re proud to highlight Dr. Jennia Michaeli, a reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist at Mount Sinai Fertility and co-director of the SickKids–MSF Fertility Preservation Program.

This collaboration helps young cancer patients and their families understand how treatment may affect future fertility and access options to preserve it. Since launching in 2024, the program has supported close to 100 patients with fertility-specific interventions.

A Canadian first — and an incredible milestone in fertility care.

A healthy baby was born at Mount Sinai Hospital after being conceived and carried in a transplanted uterus.

Mount Sinai Fertility played an important role in this historic journey, providing specialized fertility care and supporting the embryo transfer that helped establish the pregnancy.

This achievement reflects the power of collaboration, innovation and patient-centred care — and offers new hope for people pursuing parenthood in complex circumstances.

A Canadian first — and an extraordinary milestone in fertility care.

For the first time, a baby has been conceived and born in Canada following a uterine transplant.

Mount Sinai Fertility was proud to play an important role in this historic journey. Under the clinical supervision of Dr. Nigel Pereira, our team provided the specialized fertility expertise needed to achieve the pregnancy through IVF and embryo transfer into the transplanted uterus.

The healthy baby was delivered at Mount Sinai Hospital by Sinai Health’s Complex Obstetric Surgery team — the result of remarkable collaboration across fertility, obstetrics, surgery and transplant care.

For people born without a uterus, this milestone represents new possibilities and new hope for the future of reproductive care in Canada.

Congratulations to the patient, her family and every member of the care team who helped make this Canadian first possible.

For people born without a uterus, the dream of carrying a pregnancy is becoming a reality.

In October 2025, Sinai Health’s Complex Obstetric Surgery team delivered a healthy baby following a uterine transplant. The pregnancy, conceived through IVF with the Mount Sinai Fertility team, was the first of its kind to be carried and delivered in Canada.

The milestone is helping Sinai Health explore what it would take to build a Canadian uterine transplant program and make this care more accessible to patients across the country.

“For many people born without a uterus, the ability to carry a pregnancy has never felt possible,” says Dr. Sebastian Hobson. “This milestone shows that the conversation is changing – from asking whether it's possible to asking how we can make this care available to more Canadians.”

Medically necessary fertility preservation care should be easier to access, no matter where someone lives.

Mount Sinai Fertility is helping more people with cancer across Ontario protect their chance of building a family in the future.

A new CMAJ case report highlights our ovarian tissue cryopreservation program, including remote tissue transport to our specialized cryobank in Toronto. This approach allows patients to have surgery closer to home, while our team provides expert counselling, tissue processing, and long-term storage for medically necessary fertility preservation.

Mount Sinai Fertility is the only centre in Canada offering this remote transport option for ovarian tissue cryopreservation.

By moving tissue instead of patients, we are reducing barriers and bringing leading fertility preservation care closer to home.

A major milestone for fertility care in Canada - the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) has published work from our Mount Sinai Fertility team, a national leader in Fertility Preservation, showcasing the country’s first case of ovarian tissue transportation and centralized cryobanking.

This new model of care expands access to fertility preservation for young oncology patients seeking future parenthood, regardless of geographic location.

Dr. Jennia Michaeli, Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility specialist, clinician-investigator at Mount Sinai Fertility, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Toronto, leads the ovarian tissue cryopreservation and cancer survivorship programs. Her work brings innovation in research and clinical practice to improve outcomes for patients facing fertility-threatening treatments.

This is life-changing care in action – innovation that reaches more patients and strengthens outcomes across the system.
