The depression I was diagnosed with late last year ebbs and flows. And it’s f*cking annoying.

If not for my working out, I’d probably be in a far worse place.

Thank God for sustaining me through it all.

But I'd much prefer and pray that it all goes away.

Your training doesn't have to be perfectly laid out or structured. Having even a semblance of a plan and showing up is all that ultimately matters.

Take it from someone who has lost 55 lbs. and kept it off for the last 20 years.

For instance, yesterday was my “active rest day,” and it just so happened that I bought gourmet doughnuts and had pizza for dinner. I can’t remember what else I had at lunch, but that was my day’s worth of meals.

In the past, I would have felt guilty today, swearing to restrict myself today, only to fall off again later today or tomorrow.

And then I would get so hung up on the increase in the scale this morning, too.

But a lot has changed since then.

Yes, there’s something to be said about eating clean all the time to reach your weight loss goals.

But is that something you could realistically do ALL the time?

Balance isn’t so much a “requirement” as it is something that keeps you sane and grounded in realistic expectations while on your weight loss journey.

And I hate using the word ‘empowering,’ but that’s precisely what it is when you take the time to balance eating foods that are considered less healthy and more healthy.

Anyway, that’s my message for this Saturday—especially as “clean eating” tends to fall by the wayside on the weekends.

Permit and be gracious to yourself to indulge a bit, and if necessary, pick up where you left off as soon as later today.

You’ve got this.

I’ll say this until I’m blue in the face:

Action PRECEDES motivation.

Not the other way around.

DOING the thing gets you pumped to continue doing the thing.

This is why I coach my clients to start with the smallest step possible. It’s those minute actions that get you rolling and build momentum.

Trash the “I’m not motivated” talk. Yes. You are. You just have to do something—no matter how imperfect—and that “elusive’ motivation will follow.

Follow for more tips.

Eating a balanced diet—where you allow indulgences here and there—is what will help you reach your goal weight/physique/whatever and stay there the longest.

So, that might look like leafy greens, slow-digesting carbs, lean protein, and a slice of cheesecake for dessert—or a cookie. Whatever.

As tempting as it might be to restrict restrict restrict, that is not the way.

That will most likely lead you down a spiral of resentment with more steps backward than forward.

Stick to the basics, and permit yourself to enjoy ALL foods.

You've got this.
