You’ll fold the same basket of laundry three times before it actually gets put away. You’ll spend real time with every family — getting to know their story before you ever suggest a name. You’ll finally sit down and immediately feel like you should be doing something else. You’ll wonder if you’re doing enough, for the business and for your own kids.

And you’ll still show up tomorrow. Because somewhere, a family needs their person.

This photo is from my own labour, years ago. It’s not what I pictured. I’d prepared for months.

My kids are the reason I stopped believing in the perfect birth plan. You can prepare for everything and still end up somewhere you never imagined.

What determines how you remember it isn’t whether it went to plan. It’s whether you felt like a person while it was happening. 🤎

My nurses were watching the monitors. That was their job, and they did it well.

But nobody in that room was just watching me, how I was doing, not just how my numbers were doing.

That’s not a gap in care. It’s a different job entirely.

Here’s the part nobody explains: a doula who guarantees she’ll actually be at your birth can only hold two or three due dates a month. She’s not being precious about it. She’s protecting the promise. Once your month is full, it’s full.

Which means by around 20 weeks, the doulas you would have chosen are already spoken for — not because they’re in demand for demand’s sake, but because the math ran out.

At 12–20 weeks you’re choosing on fit. Philosophy, personality, how she talks about your last birth.
At 28–34 weeks the question quietly changes from “who do I want?” to “who is free?”

That’s the real cost of waiting. Not the money. The choice.
