FALL PREVENTION

Every year thousands of seniors fall, more times than not, the fall happens in a home setting. There are many cases where people are stuck for hours or days because they have fallen and cannot get up.

Let’s all make changes in our homes to prevent falls, to protect you, the people who live with you and your guests, before it to the point where we have fallen and can't get up.

Risk areas to consider when decreasing your home’s risk of falls are the floors, stairs and steps, and hallways.

FLOORS:
• Make sure your furniture is rearranged so that there is a clear path to enter and exit rooms.
• If you have rugs or carpet on the floor use double sided tape so the rug doesn’t slip or have a non-slip backing.
• Pick up things that are on the floor and move them out of the way. Examples are shoes, paper, bags, and umbrellas. Always keep objects off the floor.
• If you have to walk over or around wires or cords (like lamp, telephone, or extension cords) consider taping or coiling cords and wires next to the wall so you can’t trip over them.

STAIRS AND STEPS: (both inside and outside your home)

• Pick up things and objects off the stairs, remembering to always keep the stairs clear.
• Fix broken, lose or uneven steps and torn carpet on steps as well as loose or broken handrails.
• Ensure that there is sufficient lighten in the stairway. If not have an electrician put in a light at the top and bottom of the stairs. Also ensure you have a light switch at the top and bottom of the stairs.

KITCHEN:

• Rearrange the items in your cabinets so that the things you use often on the lower, easier to reach shelves. When it is necessary to use a step stool to reach high shelves, use a stool with a bar to hold on to. Avoid using a chair or anything rocky or slippery.

BATHROOMS:

• In your bath tub or shower, put a non-slip rubber mat or self-stick strips on the floor of the tub or shower to reduce slips.
• Add grab bars inside the tub and next to the toilet, for extra safety.

OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT FALLS:

• Ensure that you exercise regularly because exercise helps make you stronger along with increasing your balance and coordination.
• Be careful of the medications that you use. Talk to your doctor or pharmacists about all the medications you take to ensure you can take certain medications with others.
• Check your vision at least once a year by an eye doctor because poor vision can increase your risk of falling.
• Add lighting to dark areas. Hang lightweight curtains or shades to reduce glare.

Remember that preventing a fall is done before you fall and can’t get up. Take the time to make your home a safer place to live.

Sticking to Your New Year’s Resolutions

It’s 2017! A new year, a new you. Many of us make New Year resolutions every year, some of us make the same ones every year. Let’s make this the last year we make this same resolutions. Loving Support is going to give you tips to sticking to your new year’s resolutions.

Why does it feel impossible to keep?

In order to solve a problem, you have to identify the issue. For some people, New Year resolutions tend to be goals that they have yet to achieve or overcome over the years. People also have a tendency to have the same New Year’s goal, year after year, because they keep failing to achieve the goal.

It is easy to make a new year’s resolution and hard to work on the goal. This is because it's easier to say something than it is to do something. Researchers say just saying the New Year’s resolution makes you feel good alone, better than actually trying to fulfill the goal. For example, going to the gym and being more active is a common new year’s resolution. Saying you are going to be more active makes people feel good, it feels more better than going to the gym, and being active.

How to stick to your new year’s resolution?

This is better said than done. Making a SMART plan to achieve the goal. SMART is an acronym for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time frame.

• Specific goals answers the questions who, what, where, when and why.
• Measurable goals have a criteria for measuring the progress. It helps you see your achievement and stay on track.
• Attainable goals have successful ways that you can do to make them come true.
• Realistic goals are goals that you are willing and able to complete.
• Timely goal has a time frame in which the goal should be completed. Saying someday will make the resolution at the back of your unconscious mind’s to do list.

Check out http://topachievement.com/smart.html for more information in regards to creating SMART goals.

Tips to sticking to your SMART goal.

• Make sure the steps to achieving your goal is fun, make it as entertaining as you can
• If possible, completing a goal with someone else can make it easier to complete
• Prioritize your list of goals
• Focus on a couple goals at a time, don’t spread yourself thin

Remember some goals take time to complete or to see results. Stick with it and you will see the rewards. Have a safe and happy New Year.

Goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. In other words, in the goal setting process make sure you use the SMART system.

Happy New Year! Wishing everyone all the best for 2017.

The Facts about Baby Boomers

When people hear the term baby boomer, some people automatically think of seniors, or the health care issue. Which are both true seeing as the first set of the baby boomers turned 65 in 2011. But there are more facts about this generation. More babies were born in 1946 than any prior year. This trend lasted for approximately 20 years. This all took place right after World War II ended.

In Canada, there was a significant number of babies born between 1946 and 1965, approximately 8.2 million baby boomers (Stats Can, 2011). The baby boomers are well known because they opened up a lot of opportunities over the years. For example, they increase the demand for disposable diapers. The disposable diaper was more in need than ever before because there was increase in the amount of working women as well as the boom in babies being born. Many companies started to tap into this industry such as Proctor & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson. Before the boom, this industry was failing due to lack of innovation and the popularity of the cloth diapers. The boomers created a strong market and demand for the disposable diaper industry.

The baby boomers created a lot of trends over the years, more than any other generation so far. Their generation fought for many things. Gender equality was taking a new direction. Towards the end of 1965 Women were have children later due to them entering the work force and with birth control this was become more and more common as time went on.

Facts about baby boomers:

• About 30% of Canadian will postpone their retirement till later.
Noticing the gap in your retirement ahead of time will help those become proactive in their current saving matrix. Allocating savings for retirement should be a bill in everyone’s on going life and not to only rely on Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) as a source of income and have it as a bonus because the income from government sources will leave most under the poverty line.
• Living beyond means
When coming to retirement, we should look at bootstrapping expenses to a new level. As most individual’s income will be less when they retire and as a result they will need to shift life still. This can mean downsizing from house to condo or simply cutting down bills. Sometimes it’s as easy as making changes to your status as a senior citizen and you will receive discount and or rewards.

List of Senior Discounts:

• Bank accounts – Low or no fees
• Food – many fast food place give seniors a 10-20% discount depending on the establishment
• Department stores – Winners, Bulk Barn, and much more provide discounts
• Transit – senior pricing
