Bone health was never supposed to mean no more brownies
These are Katie's famous black bean brownies from Chocolate Covered Katie, and nobody ever guesses the secret ingredient.
Here's why they earn a spot in my kitchen: black beans, oats and cocoa bring magnesium, fibre and plant protein to the pan. Your bones are built from at least a dozen minerals, and magnesium is one most women never hear about.
Is it a health food? No. It's a treat, and treats belong in a bone-supportive life.
What shapes your bones is what you eat most days (beans, greens, whole grains, nuts, seeds), not whether you had a brownie on Friday.
THE RECIPE (makes 9–12)
1½ cups black beans (one 15-oz can, drained and rinsed well)
2 tbsp cocoa powder
½ cup quick oats
¼ tsp salt
⅓ cup pure maple syrup
2 tbsp sugar (or swap for extra maple syrup)
¼ cup coconut oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
½ tsp baking powder
½–⅔ cup chocolate chips
8
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Blend everything except the chips in a food processor until completely smooth. Stir in the chips, spread into a greased 8×8 pan and bake 15–18 minutes. Let cool at least 10 minutes before cutting. Katie's full recipe and tips are on her blog, chocolatecoveredkatie.com.
Thank you, Katie, for proving dessert can be made from real food.
