Instagram only moving forward. Not on a trip, was just being silly... "announcing my departure" from Facebook like at an airport. Oof. Y'all are gonna miss my comedy. Also wasn't smart enough to know that when you 'delete' your account it remains up for 30 days... d'oh. Okay bye.

I was lied to as a child.

I grew up in Sarnia just outside the Aamjiwnaang First Nation reserve, where I was ‘taught’ to believe the racist tropes about Indigenous peoples. As a child I naively accepted these racist ideas.

I lived on the border across from the US where ignorant fear-based Black stereotypes were propagated daily.  I lived my early life believing that the inequity thrust upon Black people was appropriate and deserved.

These anti-Indigenous and anti-Black narratives built unconscious racist biases within me, and it has taken me many years to accept my inherent racism and work towards unlearning all the lies that I was taught.

I have also lived my life in a world where I was repeatedly told that all people wearing Keffiyehs were terrorists and that Arabs should be feared.

I have been doing the work and taking the time to educate myself, through workshops, readings, podcasts, news stories, and through dialogue with colleagues and friends.

I am unlearning the lies I’ve been raised with.  I can no longer look away from the children who have historically been ignored by the Western world.

I am not comfortable remaining silent.  It is appropriate to use my voice as a pediatrician to speak out against these historic lies that allow the Western world to silently accept what is happening.

Whether it is in Palestine, the Sudan, or the Congo, killing children is wrong.

The North American voices speaking out against the murders of children in the global south have been too few.

I will continue to use my small platform, and my voice to advocate for these children.

Eight years ago I opened Roundhouse Pediatrics in the Junction. When I opened the office I already had an established base of patients and as a result by February 2015 I was no longer accepting new families for primary care services.  However, I felt that it would be unfair and unkind to open a pediatric clinic in a neighbourhood but not be available for those neighbourhood kids.  From the day I opened the doors I have always offered urgent care services for anyone who came to the clinic, whether a Roundhouse patient or not.  I think I became quite the place to be for kids with illnesses… or maybe it was just that I was 2 doors down from Ice Cream Junction?!

Then, during the early stages of the pandemic I shifted to a hybrid model of care, doing as much as I could virtually and bringing kids into the office when necessary.  That model proved to be very desirable very quickly.  I became accessible to anyone anywhere in Ontario for audio and video consultations.

In the last 2 years, within this this hybrid model, I have provided care to children whose own doctors were unavailable or less convenient to access.  I have provided second opinions to families unsatisfied with the care they received elsewhere.  I have provided follow up care for kids who were seen in hospital and needed aftercare post discharge.

I have always tried to provide the best care possible, efficiently, and most importantly empathetically.  For the most part I think I have succeeded.

However this model of care for a solo practitioner has become untenable.  Moving forward, Roundhouse Pediatrics urgent care services will be provided only to Roundhouse families.

I’m sure this seems unfair to many but it is the only way I can continue to provide quality care at a level I deem reasonable to patients. I feel very grateful for the kindness and appreciation I have received from families in this neighbourhood over this last eight years.
