🧬 Cells have to deal with tangled, misfolded proteins all the time.

In a new study published in Nature Portfolio’s Nature Communications, Prof. Gilad Haran and colleagues at the Weizmann Institute of Science show how tiny molecular machines help pull these proteins apart.

Instead of using force, the machines work more like a “revolving door,” guiding the protein in one direction while its natural motion does the rest.

This process helps keep cells healthy. When it breaks down, it can play a role in diseases like cancer and neurodegeneration.

The findings may also help scientists design more efficient artificial molecular machines, opening the door to new technologies in medicine and beyond.
