Nasrin Abdulla, age 57, from Richmond Hill, ON, has chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is in search of a living donor for a kidney transplant to save her life. Nasrin is looking for a living kidney donor with blood type O+ or O-, preferably, but will accept B+ or B- as well, to donate at Toronto General Hospital.
Unfortunately, there aren’t enough organs for everyone who needs them. While we are born with two kidneys, a healthy person can live a normal, healthy life with just one. Nasrin needs a donor who is between 18-60.
Thanks to the National Kidney Paired Donation Program, a donor doesn’t need to be the same blood type. The donor doesn’t need to be a relative or of the same ethnicity, just a healthy person.
The criteria for living organ donors are different than for blood donors. If you aren’t eligible to donate blood, you may still be eligible here. The kidney is an incredible organ; you can live a healthy, happy life with only one kidney! This surgery is more common than you may think and is very successful.
About Nasrin:
Nasrin Abdulla is a 57-year-old woman from Richmond Hill who has been living with end-stage kidney failure for over 30 years. First diagnosed in her twenties, she underwent a kidney transplant in India in 1997, but unfortunately, the transplant was not successful, and she has relied on dialysis ever since. Despite being on and off the transplant waitlist for more than two decades, currently listed at Toronto General Hospital, Nasrin has yet to receive a successful transplant. Her health has steadily declined; she suffers from chronic pain, fatigue, muscle cramps, severe swelling, and can no longer walk without assistance. She is currently admitted to hospital and continues to receive hemodialysis three times a week at Mackenzie Health.
Her daughter shares how Nasrin lost her parents as a child in Afghanistan, was denied the opportunity to receive an education as a girl, and spent most of her life battling chronic kidney disease. In 2002, Nasrin immigrated to Canada in the hopes of better healthcare and a chance at a healthier life. Now a mother of four, Nasrin’s greatest wish is to regain her health so she can be present for her children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, none of her immediate family members are a compatible donor match. As her body weakens and dialysis becomes harder on her, her family is desperate for her to finally have the kidney transplant that could give her a second chance at life.
Nasrin’s family is grateful for all the support, which gives them hope of finding a match. Please consider the “gift of life” by getting tested to see if you are a suitable candidate to donate a kidney.

The Living Kidney Donor Program will contact applicants about next steps. Candidates go through a comprehensive assessment to ensure they’re healthy enough to donate. Donor testing is done in Toronto, but potential donors can do some of the testing at local labs in your hometown.
OHIP covers the testing, surgery, and hospital stay. For expenses like travel, food, accommodation and income replacement, there’s the Trillium Gift Of Life reimbursement program for up to $5,500. They will reimburse expenses even if you get partway through testing and change your mind or aren’t accepted. You can also submit receipts for reimbursement throughout the process, and don’t need to wait until after the surgery. Visit: https://www.giftoflife.on.ca/en/transplant.htm.htm
