Techcouver profiled BaroShift this week.

Our founder, Dr. Michael Gilbert, spent two decades in drug discovery. A back injury got him curious about nervous system regulation, so he followed the science. The result is a forearm armband and an eight minute daily session, paced to your own baroreflex interval, with a score for how your training is going.

Train your reflex.

Techcouver is an online publication providing real-time reporting and analysis of emerging technology news in Vancouver and throughout British Columbia.

You already know that slowing your breath calms you down. But here's what surprised me after 20 years developing drugs: it has nothing to do with oxygen.

Every slow breath moves one muscle beneath your lungs. That shifts the pressure in your chest. And your body has sensors on its largest arteries that read that change instantly.

Those sensors run a loop called the baroreflex. It sets your heart rate, your blood pressure, and the switch between stress and recovery.

Most wearables track that switch. BaroShift trains it.

HRV is the readout. The baroreflex is the engine.

on heart rate variability (HRV). What it is, why it
declines with age, and why it responds to training.

You can be exhausted and wired at the same time. Here's the physiology nobody explains.

Your autonomic nervous system runs on two settings. A gas pedal that speeds you up under stress, and a brake that slows you down for recovery.

The catch: it doesn't only react to real danger. A stressful message fires the same response as a genuine threat.

Spend too much of your day in the fast gear and your body never gets the signal to recover. That is what chronic stress actually is. A physical state, not just a mood.

The switch between the two is trainable. Save this for the next time your mind won't power down at midnight.

Stress isn’t the problem, but how fast you recover from it is.

There’s a system in your body that already does this, known as the baroreflex. It’s what tells your heart rate and blood pressure to come back into balance after they spike.

Most people have never trained it, so we built a device that does.

With just 8 minutes a day, the app shows you exactly what’s changing: HRV, streaks, and the full picture of your nervous system regulation.

No new routine or needing to invest an hour you don’t have. Just a body that recovers a little better every day.

If you wake at 3 AM with your mind racing and tell yourself it's just getting older, I'd like to gently push back on that.

More often than not, it's your nervous system, not your age.

Our biosignal engineer, Charlotte, explains it better than I can in about ninety seconds. Your body runs on two settings: one speeds you up to handle stress, one slows you down for rest and repair. As we age, the switch between them gets sluggish, and we end up spending too much of the day, and night, stuck in the fast gear.

The encouraging part: that switch can be trained, the same way you'd train for strength or balance.

Have a watch, and I'd love to hear if this sounds familiar to you.

HRV is the readout. The baroreflex is the engine.

Charlotte Gibson, MEng, on our biosignal engineering
team, breaks down what heart rate variability (HRV)
actually is:

Why it's one of the most important measures of health we have

Why it declines with age

Why it responds to targeted training

5 AM. Wide awake. Heart slightly fast. The room already too bright.

If this just started happening in May, it's not insomnia. It's seasonal.
Longer daylight pulls cortisol earlier and delays melatonin. After 50, a blunted baroreflex can't hold you in rest mode against it — so the body breaks the seal hours before you wanted to be up.

Blackout curtains treat the light. They don't train the brake.

Here's what's happening 👇

Early wake-ups signal a blunted baroreflex. BaroShift trains your system to stay in rest mode despite seasonal daylight shifts.

Eight hours of sleep. Still wake up exhausted.

If this is you after 50, you don't have a sleep volume problem. You have a baroreflex problem.

The baroreflex is your nervous system's master switch out of fight-or-flight. It's what lets your body actually recover during sleep.

After 50, it gets blunted and the repair shift never starts, no matter how long you stay in bed.

Blackout curtains and melatonin treat the inputs. They don't train the brake itself.
