Do you always want to cross your legs, tuck one foot beneath you or pull your knees up when you’re sitting for a long time?

For some people with very flexible or hypermobile hips, sitting with both feet on the floor can feel surprisingly restless. Your legs may naturally fall outward, and you might find yourself constantly changing positions while sitting on the couch or travelling as a passenger.

A Loop Yoga Strap can provide gentle passive containment. Placed around the thighs just above the knees, it gives your legs a boundary to rest against without forcing them into a rigid position.

The strap should be comfortably loose. This isn’t about holding your body still or correcting the way you sit.

It is simply another form of support that some bodies may find calming or comfortable.

This is also a reminder that yoga props don’t have to stay in the yoga room. Sometimes their most useful purpose is helping you feel a little more supported during everyday life.

Would this make sitting more comfortable for you?

Maybe a full life doesn’t need to be a less busy one. Maybe it just needs more places to soften.

A well-lived life can be full of work, family, friends, responsibilities, adventures, plans and all the everyday things that ask something of us.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, we need moments where nothing is being asked of us.

A comfortable place to sit. A few quiet minutes. A body fully supported. A chance to exhale and let the day be what it was.

Your soft place doesn’t have to be elaborate. It just has to feel like yours.

What does your soft place to land look like?

If sitting for meditation feels uncomfortable, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re bad at meditating or that your body isn’t flexible enough. You may simply need a different style or height of meditation cushion.

A cushion that is too low can leave your knees sitting much higher than your hips. One that is too high may make you feel as though you’re balancing on top of it. If you’re constantly shifting, leaning or trying to find a comfortable position, your cushion may not be giving your body the support it needs.

Meditation cushions aren’t one-size-fits-all. Your height, flexibility, preferred sitting position and unique body proportions all make a difference.

That is why we offer FREE Sitting Fittings in our Hamilton shop. You can try our different cushions and sitting positions so we can help you find the support that feels best for your body.

Have you ever wondered whether you’re sitting on the right meditation cushion?

What makes a Love My Mat Bolster different?

We make our bolsters in small batches in our Hamilton, Ontario workshop. Each one has a firm, supportive shape, a removable washable cover and two sturdy handles that makes it easy to move.

Inside, you’ll find natural only cotton batting and no foam. The cotton is carefully layered and shaped by hand to create the density and structure needed for restorative yoga, supported poses and everyday rest.

Producing locally allows us to pay close attention to the details, from the way the fabric is cut to the final seams and finishing. It also means our bolsters are made by real people who know these products inside and out.

We make them to be used often, cared for and kept for years.

What would you most like to know about how our props are made?

When did yoga become another thing we feel we need to be good at?

Somewhere between the fancy poses, impressive flexibility and picture-perfect flows, it's easy to forget that yoga can also be about slowing down.

You don't have to break a sweat, touch your toes or stand on your head to have a meaningful practice.

Sometimes all you need is a bolster, a blanket and a comfortable place to lie down.

Restorative yoga might not look like much from the outside, but giving your body the chance to settle, soften and rest can be exactly what you need.

And let's be honest, any yoga practice that encourages lying down gets our vote.

Are you team movement or team restorative yoga? Or a little of both?

Using yoga props is not cheating, and it doesn’t mean you are doing a lesser version of the pose.

A block in Triangle Pose brings the floor closer to your hand. That extra height can create more space through your chest, help you breathe more comfortably and allow you to find a steadier version of the pose.

A bolster under the hips in Pigeon pose helps to keep the pelvis neutral. It allows you to stay evenly weighted, while supporting the body enough for it to give in and soften.

Our bodies change from one day to the next. The support we need can change too. Using a prop is simply one way of listening to your body and choosing a version of the pose that works for you today.

Has a yoga prop ever completely changed how a pose feels for you?

Of all the yoga props we make, the Mini Round Bolster is probably the one I use most often.

Sometimes I use it during yoga. I place it under my knee in tabletop or Low Lunge when the floor feels too hard. I also tuck it beneath my knees in a forward fold when my hamstrings need a little more room.

But I use it just as often outside of yoga. I sit on it while playing on the floor with my kids, rest my head on it when I’m lying down and move it around the house whenever I need a small amount of support.

It isn’t our largest or most impressive-looking prop. It is simply small, light and incredibly useful. That makes it one of the easiest props to incorporate into everyday life.

Which yoga prop do you find yourself reaching for most often?

September always seems to bring a little more structure, a little more routine... and somehow a lot more to do.

I’m trying to stop waiting for life to get less busy before I make room for the things that help me feel like myself.

Sometimes that space is an hour. Sometimes it’s ten minutes.

What creates a little space in your day?

What if the answer is to stop trying so hard?

We’re surrounded by messages telling us to do more. Be more productive. Find a better routine. Get motivated. Keep going.

But sometimes you don’t need a pep talk.

Sometimes you’re just tired.

So grab a bolster. Put your feet up. Lie on the floor for ten minutes. Stare at the ceiling if you want to.

The to-do list will survive.

And if you know someone who could use a little less motivation and a little more lying down, send this their way.
