BUG BALM IS BACK ✨ 💚💜
Handcrafted, all organic with homegrown herbs 🌿
The skin is the largest organ in the body, capable of absorbing what’s put on it. Yet we drench our horses in toxic chemicals each year in an attempt to keep the pesky bugs off. I get it, it’s a struggle trying to keep those nasty buggers off. Bug Balm is made to be used on the horses pulse points (check the next slide to see where these are). You only need to apply it sparingly in these areas and the scent will radiate (to the bugs). Remember, it doesn’t have to be super strong smelling to you for it to be effectively strong for the bugs. I also like to apply it at the dock of the tail and ridge of the mane to deter ticks from sneaking in there. You can use Bug balm on its own or in conjunction with other products. The only caution I give is that it’s oil based so don’t slather it on areas that will be in direct hot summer sun (you should keep this in mind for ANY oil or product that contains oils- a lot of fly sprays). I have added zinc and other ingredients that naturally have SPF for added protection. This is for horse and human use, dogs I would say that it’s not lickable because of the citronella + Cedarwood.

⭐️This year looks a little different since I’m on Mat leave and have a 5 week old! BUT I’m planning to arrange some delivery days if there’s enough orders in the same area and can also offer expedited shipping (2 days ish) for $14 which might work for multiple orders at one barn to spli etc. You guys sold this product out so fast last year so don’t wait too long to get yours!
Tins are 4oz and $20 each

Yesss 👏🏻👏🏻 so tired of hearing that you had to feed it with black pepper!! It’s still effective even without it. As someone who takes turmeric religiously for chronic pain, I can attest to this! It still works amazingly 💛

Turmeric - is black pepper necessary?

Turmeric is widely touted to be a magical cure for just about anything (which is possibly stretching it, but evidence suggests that it has a remarkable number of potential biological effects, at least in rodents and humans), but only if you use it in a particular way.

Fans of the golden spice insist that it must be mixed with a fat source (coconut oil is the fave), and *freshly cracked* black pepper.

When feeding horses, this is not always terribly practical - so is it necessary? And why do people say this?

When researching turmeric for my Master's project, I learnt that curcumin (the major bioactive ingredient) is very poorly absorbed - to the point that many wonder how is can have an effect in the body at all. So various things have been tried to try and increase blood levels of curcumin.

From my final thesis 2016 -

"Absorption is another complex issue regarding the use of turmeric. Curcumin is widely acknowledged to be very poorly absorbed and rapidly metabolised, resulting in extremely low plasma concentrations (Anand et al., 2007). Whilst equine pharmacokinetic data is not available for turmeric or any of its constituents, horses would be expected to have a similar pattern, with possibly more rapid hepatic metabolism (herbivorous).

Popular advice regarding turmeric supplementation suggests a fat source be fed alongside the turmeric, as well as mixing it with pepper. As turmeric is hydrophobic, but lipid-soluble, absorption from the digestive tract is improved with a lipophilic vehicle (Shishu & Maheshwari, 2010), and piperine (a component in black pepper) has been shown to slow the metabolic process sufficient to allow an increase in bioavailability of curcumin 2- to 3-fold (Shoba et al., 1998).

In this study, a fat source (powdered coconut oil) was included in the daily meal, however as the use of pepper has not been studied in horses, it was not used to avoid introducing confounding factors in the trial."

So we chose NOT to use pepper in the trial, as it may have had its own effects on the horses - and guess what?

IT STILL WORKED!

While I don't know whether it may have worked *better* with the pepper, I'm guessing the effect would be minimal. Turmeric's efficacy is not solely based on curcumin - it contains 100s of components that may work in synergy with each other to create the results we.

Additionally, in the case of gastric ulcers which I was studying - the turmeric may have actually had a topical effect by physically coating the ulcers and acting that way.

Take home message - if getting your chef's pepper grinder out every day is stopping you from feeding turmeric, don't stress - just add the turmeric (quality IS important though) and make sure there is some sort of fat source in the feed (flaxseed, a dollop of whatever oil you may feed, it doens't matter) - and Bob's your uncle!

Can’t believe that I’m already in the third trimester (7.5 months pregnant), getting closer to meeting baby boy 🩵 I can’t help but feel so so grateful for all my amazing clients (horse and human) who have made me feel so safe this whole time. I’m so glad that I’m still able to be working 💪 Spring is always a busy time, especially this year. It feels like a race to get as many sessions in as I can before baby is here 💜

Yellow does look really great on him 💛💛

Kenny wants to remind everyone that self care is very important 💛🖤

He had his massage and KT taping with Tambercreek Equine Services yesterday (tagged in photo because it won’t work here 😭). I have to say, yellow is his colour!

Today, Kenny and the rest of the herd are getting their hooves trimmed 💅🏻

Now… I need to find a tiny halter in yellow 🥹

Are growth plates closed at 2.5 years old? NO!!
She is showing various breeds here that unfortunately were all put down before 4 years old because they were incredibly lame from being started early. If you start your horse before the growth plates are closed, it will cause bony changes leading to lamenesss.

Kenny transformation update! 🥰💜
For those that doubt bodywork and proper barefoot trimming… the results speak for themselves! Kenny has dwarfism so his angular limb deformities are not something that will go away but there’s so much that can be done to support the body and help encourage better alignment as best we can. Unfortunately Kenny has many issues due to the dwarfism so he is so lucky to be receiving the best care and love from Black Goat Farm and Sanctuary and could not be in a better place!! He’s living his best life 💕
Most horses do not have so many challenges and do really thrive with bodywork and a whole horse approach which includes skilled hoof care 💜

First post of 2026 is the smallest horse client that I have- Kenny 🥰 (honestly he seems smaller than my canine clients too lol). It’s misleading that I’m holding my stool as that day I worked on the bigger mini’s only, Kenny had his session the week before but wanted to say Hi. I normally sit on the ground to work on him 🥺😂💜
I can’t believe that 2026 is already here! I’m looking forward to another great year. Prices are staying the SAME as 2025 ❗️ Next slide is a recap of pricing + packages available, there’s lots of options to save- getting on a regular schedule, group pricing + packages. I’m still seeing clients until the baby arrives and am planning to only take a 3 month Mat leave before slowly returning 🩵. So there’s still a few months to get some sessions in before my short break; get those massages in asap 🥰
