“Earlier this year, my husband Grant lost his arm. He spent 40 days in the hospital, fighting for his life. We had many ups and downs in those 40 days, but he made it. And in large part to the donated blood he received. At one point when we were making our way out of the ICU, a doctor mentioned that most of Grant’s blood was actually not his.

For a moment, I couldn't quite process what he meant. How could his blood not be his? I had watched the transfusions for days, but never put it all together. The blood pumping through him now belonged to dozens of people who saved him and they will never know what they did for us. That’s how the system works. We depend on enough people deciding to do something most of us never think about until someone we love needs it.

What struck me wasn't simply that strangers had helped save him, it was how invisible those strangers were. We celebrate surgeons, doctors, and nurses (and rightly so!) but none of them can do their jobs if the blood isn't there.

In Canada, roughly 400,000 people donate blood each year to support a country of 41 million. Less than one per cent of Canadians are carrying a responsibility that every one of us assumes will be there. We depend entirely on Canadians choosing to show up. We (as a general population) support blood donation in principle, but getting people to donate is harder than it sounds.

I walked into a Canadian Blood Services donor centre last month to give my first blood donation. What I didn’t expect was the wave of emotion that came over me when the volunteer asked me a simple question: “What brings you in to donate today?”

I know that donating blood won’t erase everything we’ve been through and it won’t give Grant his arm back, but it has given me a way to connect to how we got here. So when the volunteer asked what brought me in to donate that day, I realized there wasn't a simple answer. It was part gratitude, part healing, and part wanting to do for someone else what strangers had done for us. It was my turn.” – Christine Burke, blood donor

Forget the treasure! Some of our donors were after something even more valuable 🏴‍☠️🩸

Ahoy, the crew at Pirate Adventures helped raise awareness for blood donation and the ongoing need for donors across Canada. More importantly, they are a perfect example of how much you get when you give.

Thanks for coming to see us, Pirate Adventures — we hope to see you back soon for a swashbuckling good time! ☠️❤️

You can donate as a crew by creating your own Partners for Life team at https://bit.ly/4wyCahe.

Some people wear their heart on their sleeve. Bobbie Lee wears her commitment to saving lives on her arm 💪❤️

Four years ago, she got a tattoo sharing her blood type and her wish to be an organ donor. Now, it's become the perfect conversation starter, inspiring others to consider donating too. She even told us she's thinking it might be time to add a little plasma to the design ✨

Today on World Organ Donation Day, we’re honouring donors like Scott who gave a kidney to someone he’d never met and changed a life forever ❤️

Scott says becoming an organ donor felt deeply meaningful. It gave him a sense of purpose, connection, and the knowledge that he had made a difference only he could make. Many donors describe the same thing: a feeling of impact that stays with them forever.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to donate plasma? Come along with Ben, one of our regulars in Calgary, on his plasma donation to experience what you get when you give! ✈️

Haven’t heard of plasma? It’s the pale, yellow liquid component of your blood. Fun fact: plasma makes up 55% of your total blood volume, and can be used to create lifesaving medications!

A big congratulations to Ben on achieving his 74th donation 👏

This young man wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the generosity of his sister.

Ollie is an energetic, determined and brave 13-year-old who began developing a bump on his neck in the summer of 2019. In November 2019, he was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma ALK Positive, a dangerous and rare form of cancer. After multiple relapses in his central nervous system, which caused him to go blind, he had a stem cell transplant in July 2020 from his sister. He is now a long-term survivor with more than 5-years in remission ❤️ Way to go, Ollie!

You can help people like Ollie whose lives depend on a stem cell transplant, too. Experience what you get when you give by visiting https://bit.ly/4fQQa0L.
