What does a lack of sleep actually do to your skin?

More than you might think.

In a study of 24 healthy women between the ages of 30 and 55, researchers restricted sleep to just three hours per night for two consecutive nights and measured changes in several aspects of skin health and facial appearance.

After only two nights of sleep restriction, researchers found measurable changes, including reduced skin hydration, increased transepidermal water loss, changes in skin pH, and decreased facial brightness.

It’s a compelling reminder that skin health is influenced by much more than the products we apply or the treatments we choose.

This is why Dr. Humphrey asks about sleep as part of every cosmetic consultation. Sleep, stress, hormones, nutrition, skincare, and lifestyle can all contribute to how our skin looks and functions, and understanding that bigger picture is an important part of a 360° approach to positive aging.

Sleep can become an especially complex part of the conversation during perimenopause and menopause, when changes in sleep quality may intersect with other factors influencing the skin. Beautiful skin really is an inside-outside story.

It may not be the newest technology in the practice, but this cautery device is tried, tested, and true.

Using a very fine heated filament, Dr. Humphrey can precisely treat small benign skin lesions, including sebaceous hyperplasia and seborrheic keratoses. For patients bothered by these small bumps or growths, treating them can make a meaningful difference in the overall clarity and appearance of the skin.

And when there are multiple seborrheic keratoses to treat? Around the office, you may hear Dr. Humphrey affectionately refer to it as a “car wash”, she got that from her good friend Ellen Marmur.

Can the right skincare routine influence more than the way your skin looks?

A recent study published in Skin Research and Technology had a meaningful impact on how Dr. Humphrey thinks about caring for women during perimenopause and menopause.

As estrogen levels decline, the skin undergoes changes of its own. It can become thinner, drier, more reactive, and more prone to changes in texture and wrinkling, making it important to adapt skincare alongside these hormonal transitions.

In the study Dr. Humphrey discusses, women followed a targeted skincare regimen for 56 days. Researchers observed improvements in measures of skin quality, including hydration, texture, and transepidermal water loss.

But those weren't the findings that stayed with Dr. Humphrey.

After just 56 days, researchers also measured an improvement in quality of life.

It’s an important reminder that skin health is about more than appearance. How our skin looks and feels can influence how we feel, and supporting women through hormonal transitions means recognizing that connection.
