Meaningful innovation starts by listening to people who will use it. When lived experience informs development, solutions are more relevant, practical, and responsive to real-world needs.

Through Praxis’ SCI Incubate and SCI Accelerator, start-ups work directly with people with SCI to refine their products and strengthen their path to market adoption. Participants also gain access to SCI-specific clinical, regulatory, and commercialization expertise, supported by Praxis’ global innovation network.

To date, Praxis has supported 20 products to market, improving access to innovations for more than 5,000 people with lived experience (PLEX).

Specialized SCI care is often concentrated in larger urban centres, while people living with SCI receive care in communities throughout BC.

Praxis’ clinical workshops and webinars bring practical, evidence-informed SCI education to regional care teams, with lived experience helping shape the learning.

The goal is to support clinicians with useful knowledge they can apply in their own settings, helping strengthen SCI care throughout the province.

Bring more confidence to SCI care with practical education grounded in evidence and lived experience.

Praxis webinars bring clinicians and the SCI community together to explore topics that matter in everyday care, from chronic pain and pressure injuries to sexual health, physical activity, and navigating services.

Coming this fall, we’ll be turning our attention to respiratory health and management. Stay tuned for details.

On World Physical Therapy Day, we recognize the physiotherapists who work alongside people living with spinal cord injury throughout rehabilitation and beyond.

Through clinical expertise, collaboration, and an understanding of each person’s goals, physiotherapists help people build strength, maintain function, adapt, and work toward greater independence.

Today is Spinal Cord Injury Day.

This week, we’ve shared stories that show some of the many ways progress in SCI research, care, and innovation takes shape.

From addressing menopause care for women with SCI and bringing specialized knowledge to clinicians across BC, to putting clinical tools at clinicians’ fingertips and using data to strengthen research and rehabilitation planning, each story is different. But they share something important: turning knowledge into action that can make a meaningful difference for people living with SCI.

On SCI Day, we celebrate the people with lived experience, clinicians, researchers, partners, and communities who help move this work forward.

As SCI Day September 5 approaches, we’re taking a closer look at the people, ideas, and work helping advance SCI research, care, and innovation.

What happens when access to specialized spinal cord injury care depends on where you live?

Praxis is using data to help answer that question and strengthen rehabilitation planning across BC.

By linking data from the Praxis-led Canadian National SCI Registry with provincial health data, the study identified differences in access to specialized rehabilitation and ongoing clinical support across the province. Praxis’ analysis helped describe these regional differences and informed discussions for the provincial rehabilitation strategy.

Better data can help decision makers plan better SCI care across BC.

Ahead of SCI Day on September 5, we’re sharing examples of how research, care, and innovation are moving forward for the SCI community.

Accurate SCI classification matters, but the process can be complex.

Praxis developed the ISNCSCI App to make a trusted clinical standard easier to use at the bedside. Built on an algorithm already used in more than 170 countries, the app helps clinicians calculate neurological level and injury severity from motor and sensory scores.

It also works offline and includes tools for saving exams, visualizing results, and training.
The app is being used in Canada and already being used internationally, including in a clinical trial in Australia.

With SCI Day coming up on September 5, we’re highlighting stories that show what progress can look like across research, innovation and care.

Where you live can shape the spinal cord injury care you receive.

Praxis is helping bring specialized SCI knowledge closer to home to advance person-centered care through clinical workshops and webinars across BC. These clinical education workshops are co-led by PLEX and clinical experts. By combining practical education with lived experience, clinicians can build their knowledge and confidence without being based in a major urban centre.

Together with our partners SCI BC, Accessible Okanagan and GF Strong, the initiative is helping strengthen SCI care in communities across the province.
