✨ Gentle Detoxification for Preconception
Your body already has a built-in detox system - through the skin, liver, kidneys, and intestines. Most people don't need a cleanse before pregnancy. Instead, support natural detoxification with plenty of water, fibre, regular exercise, fermented foods, liver-supportive foods and herbs (leafy greens, broccoli, lemon, garlic, milk thistle, artichoke, dandelion, turmeric), and a probiotic. Talk to your doctor about whether gentle detoxification is right for you.
🥗 Detox your kitchen: Reduce exposure to toxins by replacing plastic food containers and bags with glass, porcelain, stainless steel, silicone, or cloth alternatives. Choose BPA-free canned foods whenever possible.
🌱 Choose organic: Organic fruits, vegetables, and grass-fed meats can help reduce exposure to pesticides, glyphosate, hormones, and other toxins. Use the EWG Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen lists to guide your choices.
🍷 Alcohol: While alcohol should be completely avoided during pregnancy, small amounts during preconception are generally acceptable—no more than 4 drinks per week and 2 per day. If actively trying to conceive, avoid alcohol from 72 hours before ovulation until a positive pregnancy test or your next period.
☕ Caffeine: Keep intake below 200mg/day and choose organic coffee or tea to reduce pesticide exposure.
🐟 Mercury & heavy metals: Choose small, wild-caught fish with shorter lifespans, such as salmon, trout, calamari, tilapia, sardines, anchovies, and herring. Avoid farmed fish and limit high-mercury species like tuna, halibut, swordfish, mackerel, marlin, pike, and lobster.
