If your child has been diagnosed with PANDAS or PANS, you may have heard about Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN) as a potential treatment option.

🤔 So, what is it?

🌟 LDN is a medication prescribed in very small doses (typically 0.5–4.5 mg) that helps regulate the immune system and reduce inflammation. Unlike medications that suppress the immune system, LDN works by helping to restore immune balance and may reduce neuroinflammation.

In children with PANDAS/PANS, an abnormal immune response to an infection can trigger inflammation within the brain, leading to a sudden onset of neurological and psychiatric symptoms.

⬇️ LDN may help support ⬇️

- Immune system regulation
- Reduction in neuroinflammation
- OCD symptoms
- Mood regulation - anxiety, panic
- Tics (motor and verbal)
- Irritability and rage episodes
- Sleep quality
- Overall symptom severity

While LDN can be a valuable tool, it is not a standalone treatment. Successful management of PANDAS/PANS often requires addressing the underlying trigger, whether that is an active infection, chronic inflammation, immune dysregulation, gut health, environmental factors, or other contributors.

Every child responds differently, and treatment should always be individualized based on their symptoms, medical history, and underlying drivers.

If you’re wondering whether Low-Dose Naltrexone may be appropriate for your child, Dr. Bri Takesh*ta is happy to discuss whether it could be part of a comprehensive treatment plan. 🌙

🌟 Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN): A Small Dose with Big Potential for Autoimmune Health

Autoimmune conditions occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, leading to chronic inflammation and symptoms that can affect nearly every organ system.

One therapy that has gained increasing attention is Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN).

Unlike the standard dose of naltrexone used to treat opioid dependence, LDN is prescribed at much lower doses (typically 0.5–4.5 mg daily) and works by gently modulating the immune system rather than suppressing it.

🌙 Potential benefits of LDN may include:
- Reducing inflammation
- Modulating immune system activity
- Decreasing pain and fatigue
- Improving sleep and overall well-being
- Supporting quality of life in some autoimmune conditions

LDN has been studied or used clinically in conditions such as:
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
- Crohn’s disease/Ulcerative colitis
- PANDAS/PANS
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Sjögren’s syndrome
- Psoriasis
- Fibromyalgia
- Myalgic encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS)

While research continues to grow, LDN is not a cure and isn’t appropriate for everyone. It works best as part of a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan that addresses the underlying drivers of inflammation, including nutrition, gut health, sleep, stress, and lifestyle.

If you’re living with an autoimmune condition and are wondering whether LDN may be appropriate for you, book a consultation with Dr. Bri Takesh*ta, ND to discuss your options. 💛

🤔 Noticing lighter patches on your skin after spending more time in the sun? ☀️

Two common causes can lead to lighter skin patches, but they have very different origins.

🌙 Tinea Versicolor (Fungal)

A common, harmless yeast that naturally lives on the skin can sometimes overgrow, especially evident during the summer.

Common features:
- White, pink, or tan patches
- Often on the chest, back, shoulders, or neck
- May have a fine, flaky scale
- Can be mildly itchy
- More noticeable after tanning because the affected skin doesn’t tan normally

🌙 Vitiligo (Autoimmune)

Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition where pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) are lost, resulting in completely depigmented skin.

Common features:
- Bright white, sharply defined patches
- Smooth skin without scaling
- Often affects the face, hands, elbows, knees, or around the eyes and mouth
- Hair within the patch may also become white
- Usually not itchy

Treatment focuses on slowing progression and encouraging repigmentation when possible.

Other less common causes of light patches include:
• Post-inflammatory hypopigmentation (after eczema or rashes)
• Pityriasis alba
• Sun damage

If you’re unsure what’s causing changes in your skin, an assessment can help determine the diagnosis and the most appropriate treatment. Book a discover call with Dr. Bri Takesh*ta, ND.

💭 Can you get pregnant with PCOS? Absolutely.

PCOS is one of the most common causes of irregular ovulation, which can make it harder to conceive. The good news is that many people with PCOS go on to have healthy pregnancies with the right support.

✨ Treatment isn’t one size fits all. Depending on your situation, improving ovulation may involve nutrition, lifestyle changes, supplements, medications, or ovulation induction.

If your cycles are irregular or you’ve been trying to conceive without success, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

🌊 Swimming & Kids: How to Reduce Chlorine Exposure This Summer

Swimming is a fantastic way for kids to stay active and cool off, but frequent exposure to chlorinated pools can sometimes contribute to dry skin, eczema flares, irritated eyes, and respiratory irritation in sensitive children.
Here are a few simple ways to help minimize chlorine exposure:

🌙 Rinse Before Swimming
A quick shower before entering the pool helps reduce the amount of chlorine that is absorbed by the skin and hair.

🌙 Shower Immediately After Swimming
Wash off chlorine as soon as possible using a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser or a chlorine remover shampoo.

🌙 Moisturize Afterward
Apply a rich, fragrance-free moisturizer within a few minutes of showering to help restore the skin barrier and reduce dryness.

🌙 Protect the Eyes
Well-fitting swim goggles can help prevent chlorine-related eye irritation.

🌙 Stay Hydrated
Swimming and hot weather can increase fluid needs. Encourage children to drink water before, during, and after swimming.

🌙 Support Healthy Skin
A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, colourful fruits and vegetables, and adequate vitamin D can help support skin barrier health and recovery.

🌙 Consider Pool Choice
When available, saltwater pools may be gentler on the skin and eyes than traditionally chlorinated pools, although they still contain chlorine.

Most children tolerate chlorinated pools very well, and the benefits of swimming far outweigh the risks. These simple habits can help reduce irritation, especially for children with eczema, asthma, or sensitive skin.

💭 “What if I never get pregnant? What if I lose this pregnancy? What if I never have a baby?"

If you are struggling to conceive or experiencing pregnancy loss, some of these questions may sound familiar. These types of catastrophic "what if" thoughts, often triggered by fertility struggles can feel relentless and exhausting.

But did you know that your brain is not trying to antagonize you in these moments nor is it defective in any way? There's an evolutionary purpose to these anxious thoughts. When a person experiences something stressful like infertility and pregnancy loss, the amygdala-the brain's alarm system-is triggered and scans for danger. This can lead to anxious "what if" thoughts that attempt to protect us from potential dangers.

However, in today’s world, many of the terrifying thoughts that our fear brains create, never end up happening. This can lead to "double suffering": anxiety from the "what if" thought, and also suffering if the negative event actually occurs.

If you catch yourself engaging in catastrophic thinking, try these techniques:

🌙 Use your breathing to calm your nervous system. When we are anxious, our breath becomes shallow. Try taking slow deep breaths from your abdomen. This sends a message to the brain that you are safe.

🌙 Challenge yourself to come up with a positive what if thought such as “what if my body is capable of sustaining a pregnancy? "Fake it 'til you make it" can help counter the negative "what if" thoughts.

🌙 Consider “neutral land“. Sometimes the safest place to be is not predicting the worst case scenario or the best case scenario, when in reality, we simply do not know what the next day brings. Instead of "I’ll never get pregnant," try " I don’t know when I will fall pregnant."

If you're struggling with infertility and notice catastrophic thinking is impacting your day-to-day life, speaking to our fertility counselor, Leeya, may help. To book a free discovery call or first session please use the link below. 💛

🌟 Best Protection Practices Against Ticks

Ticks can transmit bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause illnesses such as Lyme disease. Although not every tick carries disease, taking preventative measures is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk. Whether you're hiking, gardening, camping, or spending time in grassy, wooded, or brush-filled areas, taking precautions to prevent a tick bite is the best way to protect yourself and your family.

⬇️ The best protection strategies against ticks includes:

- Wear long sleeves and long pants when hiking.
- Tuck pants into socks in areas with tall grass or dense brush.
- Stay in the centre of trails whenever possible.
- Perform a full-body tick check after spending time outdoors, paying close attention to the scalp, behind the ears, armpits, groin, behind the knees, and around the waist.
- Shower within two hours of coming indoors.
- Check children and pets carefully after outdoor activities.
- Use a tick repellent spray.

See Dr. Bri Takesh*ta's last post on natural tick repellents as one of the protective practices against ticks.

🥾 Heading out for a hike, camping trip, or spending time in tall grass? While no natural repellent is 100% effective, certain essential oils may help reduce the likelihood of tick bites when used alongside other preventative measures.

🌟 DIY Tick Repellent Spray 🌟

Ingredients:

• 2 oz (60 mL) glass spray bottle
• 1 tsp witch hazel
• Distilled water (approx. 4 Tbsp)
• 10 drops lemon eucalyptus essential oil
• 10 drops cedarwood essential oil
• 10 drops geranium essential oil (rose geranium)
• 5 drops lavender essential oil

📝 Directions:

• Add the essential oils to the bottle.
• Add the witch hazel.
• Fill the remainder with distilled water.
• Shake well before each use.
• Spray on clothing, hiking boots, socks, and exposed skin (avoiding the face and eyes). Reapply every 1–2 hours.

⚠️ Safety Tips:

• Always dilute essential oils before applying to the skin.
• Perform a patch test before first use.
• Essential oils are not recommended for infants and are not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

🌱 A Note on Natural Repellents

Essential oils may help deter ticks, but they have not been shown to be as effective or long-lasting as approved repellents such as DEET or picaridin in high-risk tick areas.

💚 Don’t rely on repellent alone! Follow along for Dr. Bri Takesh*ta’s best protection practices against ticks.
