The truth about hair loss from a dermatologist:

• Hair loss is not one diagnosis. If you don’t know the cause, you may be treating it wrong.
• Losing up to 100 hairs a day is considered normal but sudden heavy shedding needs an assessment.
• Gradual thinning needs early action. If your ponytail is smaller, your part is wider, or your scalp is more visible, don’t ignore it. The longer you wait with progressive thinning, the harder it can be to regain density.
• Supplements are not a hair loss treatment unless you actually have a deficiency.
• Topical minoxidil is still one of the best-studied options, but it takes consistency and it does not work for everyone.
• Most hair loss treatments are maintenance treatments. If you stop, you may lose the benefit.
• Tight buns, slicked-back ponytails, extensions, and chronic tension can absolutely contribute to hair loss.
• Your scalp matters. Dandruff, itching, flaking, and inflammation are not just cosmetic — they can worsen shedding.

Comment HAIR to learn more about the RE:YOU Hair Revival Serum and get 10% off your first purchase.

Hair loss isn’t one-size-fits-all, and neither is the solution. A new option I’ve been learning more about as an advisor is . Their topical Hair Revival Serum with NOVOGRO™ biotechnology uses a novel dual-pathway approach, with molecules developed specifically for hair thinning that target both the hair follicle and its surrounding environment.

It’s also formulated without ingredients known to be unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and is an especially interesting option for women looking for a non-drug approach to hair thinning.

Comment AZELAIC and I will send a link to my favorite OTC options.

Azelaic acid is one of my favorite multi-tasking skincare ingredients. It can help with acne, redness and inflammation, post-acne dark spots and uneven pigmentation, and can be useful for conditions like rosacea and melasma.

You’ll find azelaic acid in both over-the-counter and prescription products. Prescription formulations are well studied and available in higher concentrations, but OTC options can be effective too. One caveat: the percentage on the label doesn’t tell you the whole story. How azelaic acid is formulated and delivered into the skin matters, and higher strength isn’t automatically better for everyone.

If you’re treating a specific skin condition, it may be worth talking to your dermatologist about which formulation makes the most sense for you.

I don’t hate niacinamide, but I do think it can be an overhyped ingredient.

In the right concentration and formulation, it may help with a range of skin concerns. But some people find it irritating, especially when it’s layered across multiple products. And that’s the thing: niacinamide is already in SO many skincare products. Before adding a separate niacinamide serum, check what’s already in your routine. You may not need another one.

The best lip filler is the kind you barely notice.
The goal is not to create a different lip, but to restore balance, refine shape and add subtle volume while still looking like you.

These before-and-afters of my patients show how individualized, conservative treatment can enhance each person’s natural anatomy. The right product, precise placement and knowing when enough is enough all matter.

Would you consider lip filler if you knew the result could look this subtle?

Comment ACNE and I will DM a link to my favorite over the counter products for acne prone skin.

Finding the right products (OTC or prescription) and avoiding these common mistakes can make a big difference.

One ingredient generating a lot of interest in regenerative skincare right now is PDRN.

PDRN has been studied for its role in supporting the skin’s natural repair processes and is becoming an increasingly common ingredient in post-procedure skincare and skin rejuvenation.

What sets VAMP Advanced apart is its comprehensive formulation, combining PDRN with  essential vitamins, amino acids, and minerals to support skin rejuvenation and overall skin  quality. It’s also registered with the FDA and Health Canada, reinforcing its commitment to quality and regulatory standards.

I like incorporating VAMP Advanced after procedures like microneedling and laser treatments as part of a comprehensive approach to improving skin quality.

As a dermatologist these are some of the skincare questions I hear all the time. Skincare is not one-size-fits all and many questions are not a simple yes or no. Which of these answers surprised you?

Comment “RETINOL” below and I’ll DM you my dermatologist favorites!

Retinol is a type of topical retinoid that can help improve fine lines, uneven tone, texture and breakouts by supporting skin cell turnover and collagen production. But it can also cause dryness or irritation when you first start.

Here’s what I’d tell a friend starting retinol, or any retinoid:

1. You don’t need the strongest retinol (or prescription tretinoin) to get results. Consistency matters more than strength.

2. Start with a gentle formula two to three nights a week, then gradually increase as your skin adjusts. For those who tolerate it well it can be used nightly.

3. A pea-sized amount is enough for your entire face. More product does not mean better results.

4. Moisturize well afterward. If you are sensitive, try the “sandwich method” by applying moisturizer before and after your retinol.

Expect some adjustment at first, and remember that results take time.
