Osteopathy Helped Devon Recover From Concussive Symptoms

Devon’s Story

“My experience with Osteopathic treatment has been incredible!

In the beginning I had no major concerns or issues, but recently I had multiple concussions. These concussions led to a lot of neck, lower back issues, headaches as well as a lot of fear of never getting better. This was an extremely scary period in my life, unsure of what to do or how to do it.

Osteopathy helped with whiplash and dizzy spells caused by my concussion. It also helped me with the lower back issues and just general wellness.

My experience with Osteopathic treatment has been very peaceful and gentle, it is something I trusted to help me with my concussions and the fear of someone treating my body. After every appointment I feel incredible! It’s not instant at times, but it has helped me tremendously.”

Healing the Hidden Injury: Osteopathy and Concussion Recovery - Former NHL Goalie Nathan Lieuwen Shares His Journey

Nathan Lieuwen grew up in Abbotsford with a singular passion: hockey. His talent in net carried him from the junior leagues to the NHL where he played as a goaltender for the Buffalo Sabres. His trajectory was steep, promising, and built on years of dedication.

Between the ages of 22 and 26, Lieuwen suffered multiple concussions that left him with debilitating symptoms:
- persistent headaches
- brain fog, and
- a lasting impact on his peripheral vision.

Despite his determination to continue playing, post-concussion symptoms made it impossible for him to perform at the elite level required of an NHL goaltender. At 26 years old, he made the difficult decision to retire.

He recalls: “I saw other players struggling from the impact of multiple concussions. Some battled depression. Some talked about su***de. It was a dark place for them to be in pain and no one could tell them what’s wrong.”

Buffalo Sabres management did everything they could to help Lieuwen. He was evaluated by leading neurologists, surgeons, and optometrists across the United States. Despite extensive testing, no specialist could pinpoint the cause of his symptoms or offer a path forward.

Returning to his family home in the BC Interior, Lieuwen heard about osteopathy as a treatment option. With little left to try, he booked an appointment with a local osteopathic practitioner.

The impact was immediate.

“After one treatment, I knew this was different. Most of all, she gave me hope,” he said.

Over time, his post-concussion symptoms eased. His energy returned. His vision improved. He regained the ability to function fully: at first for a few hours a day, then steadily more.

Today, nearly every issue stemming from the concussions has been resolved. The few minor ones that remain are manageable with ongoing osteopathic care.

Seven years after his first osteopathic treatment, Lieuwen is thriving. He and his wife Breanne own a junior hockey team - the Cranbrook Bucks - where he mentors young athletes and remains deeply connected to the sport he loves.

“I love what I do every day. I’m an entrepreneur, a coach, a volunteer, and I have an amazing family. Osteopathic treatments changed my life!”

Lieuwen hopes his story will encourage others - athletes and non-athletes - to explore osteopathic treatment if they’re experiencing persistent symptoms after a head injury.

He adds: “I’ve had incredible changes to my health and well-being because of osteopathy. I hope others will consider seeing a qualified osteopathic practitioner. It might give them the hope and the progress that they’ve been searching for.”

September 27 to October 3 is BC Concussion Awareness Week proclaimed by the Government of British Columbia in collaboration with BC Injury Research & Prevention Unit and supported by Concussion Awareness Training Tool - CATT and Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC)

This annual campaign raises awareness of how to recognize a potential concussion, manage symptoms through a gradual return to activity, and avoid long-term consequences.

Osteopathic treatment can help with concussion recovery. Osteopathy is a safe and effective healthcare treatment which focuses on achieving a state of balance among all the systems of the body, a balance that is required to maintain optimal health.

An Osteopathic Practitioner will assess the whole body as a unit, not just the area that is causing symptoms.

Osteopathy can be used to treat a specific issue, or as a preventive health measure. Many health problems can be addressed including sports injuries, concussions, injuries from car accidents, and more.

Osteopathy is drug and surgery free.

This week, we’ll share stories of patients with concussions who have benefited from osteopathic care.

Did you know that September is Pain Awareness Month?

Roughly one in five ✋ Canadians live with chronic pain, which can stem from underlying health conditions or exist as a condition in and of itself.

Multidisciplinary pain services are considered to be the most effective approach to managing chronic pain, where osteopathy can play an important role in pain management, especially when combined with other approaches.

Osteopathy works with the whole person rather than only addressing symptoms. Chronic pain often presents with distressing impacts on mental and emotional health, affecting family, social and work relationships, in addition to the unpleasant physical sensations.

Research shows that hands-on osteopathic techniques can be highly effective for:
- Chronic low back pain
- Persistent neck and shoulder tension 💆‍♂️
- Pregnancy-related back pain 🤰

Pain is a unique experience and is different for everyone, and therefore requires a personalized approach to care.

By focusing on restoring natural movement, improving circulation, and treating you as a whole person, osteopathy helps you regain control of your body and your quality of life.

Wondering what happens during the first osteopathy appointment?

1️⃣ Your osteopathic practitioner will want to know about your presenting concerns and will also conduct a health history intake. Be prepared for them to ask many questions! Osteopathic practitioners view the body as a whole, and often connect the dots between symptoms that may be related.

2️⃣ An assessment typically consists of a combination of active and passive movements and palpation (touch).

3️⃣ Based on the findings from your assessment, your practitioner will determine which techniques to use and will provide you with an initial treatment to help you feel better.

4️⃣ Before you leave, you may receive exercises or lifestyle recommendations and will make a plan on on when to follow up or whether a referral to other healthcare providers would be helpful.

Thinking about seeing an Osteopathic Practitioner in BC? Here’s what to know.

Osteopathy, as practiced by Osteopathic Practitioners, is currently not a regulated health profession in British Columbia.

That means the title “Osteopathic Practitioner” does not, on its own, guarantee a specific level of education, training, or competency. Practitioners may have different backgrounds and levels of training.

👉 Do your research before choosing a practitioner.

Look for an Osteopathic Practitioner who belongs to an organization that promotes high standards for education, training, and professional practice, such as OsteopathyBC or organizations affiliated with the Canadian Federation of Osteopaths.

Your health matters—take the time to choose a practitioner whose education and professional standards you can feel confident about.

👚- What should I wear?
💵 - What is the cost?
