🤧🎒 Did you pick B?

According to current B.C. guidance, in general, children should stay home when they’re sick and unable to participate fully in their usual school activities.

A runny nose or occasional cough on its own doesn’t necessarily determine whether a child should stay home. What matters is how they’re feeling overall, whether they’re well enough to participate in regular activities, and whether any illness-specific guidance applies.

As families settle into the school-year routine, a few simple habits can help reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses:

🧼 Clean hands regularly with soap and water or hand sanitizer
🤧 Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow
🏠 Stay home when illness makes normal activities difficult
💧 Make time for rest and fluids when sick

BCCDC recommends regular hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and staying home when you’re too unwell to participate in your usual activities.

And remember: not every cough, sore throat, or stuffy nose has the same cause. Pay attention to how your child is feeling overall, and seek medical advice if symptoms are worsening, persistent, or concerning.

💬 What usually comes home from school first — the lost water bottle, the unfinished lunch, or the September sniffles? 😄

Here’s to a healthy start to the school year!

🌿 Turmeric and curcumin are often talked about as though they’re the same thing — but they’re not.

Pop quiz:

Curcumin is a…

Vitamin? Mineral? Herb? Or a naturally occurring compound found in turmeric?

If you picked the last one, you’ve got it.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a plant in the ginger family. Curcumin is a major component of turmeric and contributes to its characteristic yellow colour.

That means turmeric used as a spice and concentrated curcumin supplements can differ substantially in their curcumin content and formulation — so they aren’t directly interchangeable.

Curcumin has also been studied for osteoarthritis and joint health. Some research has found improvements in measures such as knee pain and function, but the evidence is still developing and higher-quality research is needed before firm conclusions can be made.

This Arthritis Awareness Month, it’s a good reminder that “natural” doesn’t automatically mean one-size-fits-all.

If you’re considering turmeric or curcumin as part of your health plan, our Naturopathic Doctors can help you understand the evidence and discuss whether it may be appropriate based on your individual health needs.

💬 Before today, did you think turmeric and curcumin were the same thing?

Arthritis isn’t simply a normal part of getting older.

More than 6 million people in Canada — about 1 in 5 adults — live with arthritis, and it can affect people at many different stages of life.

The most common type is osteoarthritis, which can cause joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced movement. The knees are among the joints commonly affected.

For people living with knee osteoarthritis, care is individualized and may include strategies such as therapeutic exercise, physical activity, weight management when appropriate, medications, and other healthcare approaches.

At Integrative, Arthrosamid® is one non-surgical injectable treatment option available for knee osteoarthritis.

Arthrosamid® is an injectable hydrogel placed into the knee joint. For appropriately selected patients, it may help reduce knee pain and stiffness while supporting improved joint function and mobility.

Results vary, and Arthrosamid® may not be appropriate for everyone. Before treatment, patients receive a full intake and orthopaedic assessment to determine whether it may be an appropriate option for their individual needs.

This Arthritis Awareness Month, we’re encouraging greater awareness of arthritis, its impact on everyday life, and the options available for managing it.

Pain is personal. Care should be too.

September is Pain Awareness Month — a time to increase understanding of pain, pain management, and the experiences of people living with pain.

For 2026, the International Association for the Study of Pain is highlighting four ideas:

Understand. Advocate. Partner. Advance.

One of the messages at the heart of this year’s campaign is that effective pain care involves communication, collaboration, and shared decision-making.

Pain can affect people in different ways. Good care starts with listening — understanding how pain is affecting your life, what matters to you, and what you hope to achieve from care.

At Integrative, our Naturopathic Doctors take a person-centred approach, working with patients to understand their concerns, discuss appropriate options, and develop individualized approaches to care. When appropriate, that can also include collaboration with or referral to other healthcare professionals.

Because pain care isn’t only about where it hurts.

It’s also about understanding the person experiencing it.

🍁 Happy Labour Day!

Today, we recognize the hard work and contributions of people across our communities.

The long weekend can also be a welcome opportunity to slow down, step away from the usual routine, and make a little more space for rest and connection before the fall season gets underway.

Whether you’re spending time with family and friends, heading outdoors, or enjoying a quieter day at home, we hope you find time for the things that help you feel restored.

From all of us at Integrative Naturopathic Medical Centre, we wish you a safe, happy, and restful Labour Day.

🍂 Feeling well—or already feeling a little run down?

As the seasons change, fall is a natural time to think about how you’re supporting your immune system.

In our latest blog, Dr. Alyssa Fruson, ND explores IV nutrient therapy as one option to consider and explains the difference between two options available at Integrative Fort Langley:
🌿 Vital IMMUNE — for general nutritional and immune support
⚡ VIRAL BUSTER — for those already experiencing symptoms of an illness or feeling particularly run down

Which approach, if any, may be appropriate depends on your individual health history, current symptoms, and goals. An IV screening appointment with one of our Naturopathic Doctors is required.

💤🎒 Don’t wait until the night before school to reset the routine.

Earlier bedtimes can be one of the toughest parts of the back-to-school transition — especially for parents and grandparents helping everyone get back into a rhythm.

Gradually shifting bedtime and wake-up times in the days leading up to school can help make the transition feel a little smoother for the whole household.

Try easing back into the routine by:

✅ Moving bedtime and wake-up time earlier little by little
✅ Returning to a consistent evening routine
✅ Keeping morning wake-up times steady
✅ Creating quieter evenings as school approaches

💬 When does your household start the back-to-school sleep reset?

1️⃣ One week before
2️⃣ Two weeks before
3️⃣ We wing it

Sleep is only one part of the transition. Regular meals, movement, hydration, and consistent daily routines can also help support a healthier start to the school year.

And while you’re helping everyone else get back into routine, don’t forget your own health. Changes in schedule can affect sleep, stress, energy, and overall well-being for parents and grandparents too.

Busy summer days can still leave your mind feeling “on.”

L-theanine is an amino acid naturally found in tea leaves, including green tea.

Researchers have studied L-theanine for its potential effects on relaxation, stress, attention, and sleep. Some research has shown promising results, but findings vary and the evidence continues to develop.

Curious about L-theanine? Our Naturopathic Doctors can help you understand the evidence and discuss whether it may be appropriate for you based on your individual health needs.
