Villa Cathay Care Home

Villa Cathay Care Home Villa Cathay Care Home provides person-centered, culturally-oriented care to seniors in Vancouver History:

In March of 1978, the New Villa Cathay of 36,000 sq.

ft., 3-storey building with 150 beds celebrated its' grand opening. Ten years later, the East wing was added for 9,000 sq. ft., 38 new beds. For the past 25 years, the Villa Cathay has been the largest Chinese seniors' full service care facility in North & South America. At the end of the 19th Century, many Chinese, who had completed the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, came to Vancou

ver, British Columbia to settle down. However, when they became ill, they could not enter the local hospitals. Fortunately, a Catholic Archbishop set up an Oriental Home on the City's East Side in 1922. The Canadian Chinese will not forget their humanity and compassion. In 1972, the City of Vancouver expropriated the Oriental Home for industrial expansion. Seven families established the New Non-profit "Villa Cathay Care Home Society".

We are deeply grateful to the Cantonese Overseas Friendship Association of Canada for their extraordinary generosity and continued support. For the second consecutive year, the Association inspired their members by launching a donation-matching initiative at their Annual Dinner, raising an incredible total of $27,470 to support our seniors!

What touched our hearts the most was that the members also took the time to visit Villa Cathay in person. By connecting directly with our seniors and understanding their daily needs firsthand, they brought immense joy to our home. This meaningful outreach beautifully reflects the power of community spirit and compassion.

Thanks to caring partners like the Cantonese Overseas Friendship Association of Canada, we are strengthened in our commitment to providing compassionate care, enriching programs, and meaningful experiences that allow every resident to enjoy their golden years with dignity, comfort, and joy.

Our residents celebrated Canada Day with a fun craft activity!

They coloured Canadian flags and made maple leaf paper plate crafts, which are now displayed around Villa Cathay for everyone to enjoy.

For many of our residents, Canada has been home for decades. It was a simple but meaningful way to mark the day together, celebrate creativity, and share their work with our community.

Behind every smiling resident, every warm meal, and every welcoming space at Villa Cathay is our incredible Support Services team!

While much of their hard work happens behind the scenes, their impact is felt throughout our home every single day. From our kitchen team preparing nutritious and comforting meals to our housekeeping, janitorial, and laundry teams ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment, they are the backbone of our residents’ daily well-being and comfort.

What makes their contributions especially meaningful is not only the quality of their work, but also the care and thoughtfulness with which they approach it. Families and residents frequently share positive feedback about these teams, noting how they take the time to learn individual preferences, accommodate personal needs whenever possible, and help create an environment where residents feel respected, valued, and at home.

Please join us in expressing our heartfelt appreciation and a huge THANK YOU to our Support Services teams for all that they do. Your hard work, compassion, and commitment do not go unnoticed, and we are truly grateful to have you as part of the Villa Cathay team!

Happy Father’s Day from Villa Cathay!

Today, we celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, and father figures in our community, whose presence and strength mean so much to their families and our community.

To mark this special occasion, we set up a Father’s Day photo booth at Villa Cathay, giving residents and families an opportunity to take photos, share smiles, and capture meaningful moments together. Residents also enjoyed a special Father’s Day lunch prepared by our kitchen team.

Wishing all fathers and families a joyful Father’s Day filled with appreciation and happy memories.

Elder abuse isn’t always visible—and that’s why awareness and education are so important.

By staying attentive, listening with care, and speaking up when something doesn’t feel right, each of us can help create a safer, more supportive community for older adults. In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we were honoured to partner with the BC Community Response Networks (BC CRN) to spark this important conversation, reinforcing our ongoing commitment to safety, dignity, and respect for all seniors.

A heartfelt thank you to Ms. Joanna Li, Regional Mentor with BC CRN, for leading insightful workshops on recognizing, preventing, and responding to elder abuse. Your expertise helped deepen understanding and strengthen awareness across our community.

This important conversation serves as a powerful reminder that preventing elder abuse is a shared responsibility—and one that continues every single day.

June is a special month for our Family Council, marking 13 years since the first Villa Cathay Family Council meeting was held on June 15, 2013!

Our family members are essential partners in creating a caring, resident-centred home for our beloved residents. Through the Family Council, families play a meaningful role in advocating for residents, contributing valuable insights, and helping to build a community where every resident can thrive.

We are deeply grateful for the Family Council’s continued partnership and engagement as we work together to support our residents.

Our residents and their families have been pouring weeks of care, patience, and shared effort into our gardens—and the results are absolutely flourishing! From planting tiny seedlings to watching each sprout take root, this garden has become a true space of pride and connection.

Gardening supports seniors' well-being by encouraging gentle physical activity, strengthening mobility, and providing rich sensory stimulation through touch, scent, and sight. It also lifts moods and promotes connection, bringing residents and families together to exchange tips and enjoy the simple joy of watching something grow.

We can't wait to see the final blooms and harvests! 🍓 🌿 🍅🌻
