his one: "Why can't I relax when there's nothing to do?" is definitely something I lived with for some decades! I'm sharing many work stories over the coming weeks which I hope will offer insight/blessings to you in your own path toward Peace, Happiness and Joy
Why can't I relax when there's nothing to do?
She wasn't lacking motivation.
She wasn't avoiding her life.
She wasn't afraid of success.
She was capable. Reliable. Driven. The kind of woman who gets things done without needing to be asked.
And yet… she couldn't settle.
Even when the house was quiet.
Even when the work was finished.
Even when she had time alone.
Something in her stayed on.
Her mind would keep scanning:
What did I forget?
What should I be doing next?
Is there something I’m missing?
Should I just get ahead on tomorrow?
Rest never fully arrived. Even when it looked like it should.
What appeared as anxiety was actually something more familiar in high-functioning women than is spoken of.
A deep internalized belief that value is tied to productivity.
That rest must be earned.
That ease comes later—after everything is handled.
And over time, the system simply stops knowing how to fully switch off.
What if the nervous system never learned that pausing, or even stopping, is safe?
What if the constant forward motion isn’t ambition… but an old survival rhythm?
And this inherited survival rhythm said “stillness isn’t safe.”
As we worked together, something subtle began to shift.
Not all at once.
But in small internal moments.
Urgency softened.
Constant scanning quieted.
And the pressure to optimize every hour began to ease.
And underneath that…
something entirely different started to appear.
Her natural rhythm.
Her intuition.
Her ability to simply be in a moment without immediately leaving it.
She began to notice small things again.
The warmth of a cup of tea.
The enjoyment of a pause without needing to earn it.
The strange relief of not immediately filling every gap in her day.
She didn’t become less ambitious.
She became less driven by pressure.
And that feels completely different in the body.
One expands you.
The other depletes you.
If your life looks full, capable, even successful—but something in you still struggles to land in it…
nothing is wrong with you!
It may simply be that you've been living from a pattern that once helped you survive and succeed…
yet this is no longer the place where you can feel fully alive.
And something in you is still reaching for aliveness.
To our inner aliveness and joy,
Alexandra
