In 1986, nephrologist Dr. David Landsberg helped start the kidney transplant program at St. Paul’s Hospital. Upon his retirement, Dr. Landsberg is looking back on his remarkable career and is amazed by how far transplantation has come.

“I never imagined we’d be transplanting people in their 80s, or that patients would still be doing well more than 40 years after their transplant,” he says.

The Clinical Support & Research Centre (CSRC) has officially reached the midpoint of its structural construction. With Level 6 complete, work is now progressing on Level 7 as the 12-storey building continues to rise.

And there’s more to come — the two-storey skybridge connecting the Clinical Support & Research Centre and the new St. Paul’s Hospital is taking shape, with its installation planned for September.

Another major milestone as the future of research, innovation and patient care continues to come to life.

DYK all inpatient rooms at the new St. Paul's Hospital will be single-patient rooms? This means more privacy and improved infection control.

Each room will include an ensuite bathroom, furniture for a family member to stay overnight, and a window to let in natural light.

On this day in 1994, Jackie Chan visited Mount Saint Joseph Hospital. 🗓️

"August 16, 1994, international movie superstar Jackie Chan visited The Children’s Centre at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital (MSJH) located in the Jackie Chan Wing at MSJH. In 1988, the Jackie Chan Children’s Wing Fund Raising Campaign was a great success. More than $1.8 million was raised towards the expansion project. The Children’s Centre at MSJH provides quality health care to children in Vancouver in a unique partnership with B.C.’s Children’s Hospital."

Mount Saint Joseph Hospital opened in 1946 and celebrates its 80th anniversary this year! While it no longer has a children’s inpatient unit, the hospital remains an essential provider of compassionate care in the heart of Vancouver's Mount Pleasant community.

Last spring, Dianne Reyes became the first patient in BC to undergo a new endoscopic procedure to remove a stomach tumour.

Doctors at St. Paul's Hospital used an advanced endoscopic technique known as a full thickness resection. Instead of making large incisions, they used a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light to reach the tumour from inside the stomach. This new approach may reduce pain and shorten recovery time.

“The surgery was a success. If I had ten thumbs, I would give it ten thumbs up. I spent one day recovering in hospital, went home the next day, and returned to work about a week later,” Dianne says.

A patient at St. Paul's Hospital became the first in Western Canada to receive a full thickness endoscopic resection for a stomach tumour.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a long-term lung condition that makes it hard to breathe. It's the fourth leading cause of death in Canada and the leading cause of hospital admissions.

At St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, respirologist Dr. Don Sin and his research team at the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation are using AI to better understand COPD and improve treatment.

"We’re just at the beginning," Dr. Sin says. "AI is helping us interrogate huge amounts of clinical and molecular data in ways that were impossible before. In the next five to ten years, we will see even more powerful insights that will transform care for complex diseases like COPD."
