What’s the difference between allergy, sensitivity, Intolerance? 🧪

People often use these terms interchangeably, but the biology and timing are not the same.

🔴 Allergy (IgE-mediated). Reactions start fast, usually within minutes to a few hours. Think hives, swelling, wheezing, and in severe cases anaphylaxis. Even tiny exposures can trigger symptoms, so IgE testing and strict avoidance are the priorities.

🟣 Sensitivity (IgG/IgA/IgG4-associated). Reactions are delayed and often show up a day or more after eating. People report joint pain, brain fog, fatigue, and other multi-system complaints. These patterns are dependent on amount of offending food eaten and are slow to appear, so consider delayed-response testing alongside structured elimination and re-testing.

🟢 Intolerance (non-immune). This is about digestion, not antibodies. Gas, bloating, and discomfort point to enzyme gaps or food chemicals, and the amount eaten matters. Focus on enzymes, portion size, and food chemistry.

Use the timeline plus symptom pattern to guide decisions. Look toward IgE when reactions are immediate and allergic. Consider IgG/IgA/IgG4 when symptoms are delayed and systemic. For intolerance, adjust diet and digestive support first. Save this for patient education and faster test selection so you can deliver clearer plans with fewer flare-ups and more precise nutrition counseling.
