If you’re feeling low right now, I hope you can be a little gentler with yourself today.

It’s okay if today is mostly about getting through the day.

Sometimes taking care of yourself means making things smaller.

Get outside for a few minutes if you can. Move your body in a way that feels manageable. Eat something. Reach out to someone you trust. Notice one thing that brought even a small amount of comfort.

And take care of your sleep without putting more pressure on it.

A regular rhythm, some daylight, movement during the day, and time to wind down can support both sleep and mood. But you do not need to sleep perfectly to start feeling a little better.

Gratitude can help too, but it does not mean pretending everything is okay. It can be as simple as noticing one thing that felt comforting, meaningful, or steady in a hard day.

Most importantly, you do not have to wait until things get worse to reach out for support. If feeling low is sticking around, affecting your daily life, or becoming harder to manage, talking with a mental health professional or someone you trust can be an important next step.

Save these reminders for a day when you might need them, or send them to someone who could use a little hope today.

I’m Tony Ho, MSW, RSW, a therapist sharing practical, compassionate strategies for sleep and mental health.

Which reminder did you need today?

Ever find yourself staring at the clock, doing mental math about how many hours of sleep you have left?

Sticking to rigid or unrealistic expectations about sleep actually fuels sleep anxiety and keeps your mind racing. Instead of fixating on hours or time lost, shift your focus to what you can control: relaxing, stepping out of bed if sleep isn't happening, and accepting that rest varies night to night.

I am still awake.

You can't willpower your way to sleep. In fact, trying to force it is usually what's keeping you awake!

When you catch yourself staring at the ceiling, try this simple mindset shift: instead of fighting the wakefulness, acknowledge it. Take a deep breath, accept that you're awake right now, and remind your nervous system that you are safe.

Trying to fall asleep earlier can be difficult if you have a later chronotype. Instead of fighting against your bodies, clock try and stick with a regular wake up time. Time works every day of the week and get lots of daylight exposure that helps to anchor your internal clock, and you can gradually and gently move it earlier until you find a sweet spot.
