A fun perk of doula work is getting invited to a lot of first birthday parties! This little one sure knew how to smash a cake. So special to celebrate with her parents and their community - though there’s nothing more special than getting invited to the original birth days.

3 doulas in overalls!

Here is our entire Voyage Birth team. Katie has begun midwifery school at UBC, while Hannah has joined Suzi to continue supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

We are grateful for all your support in this season of transition. Hooray for student midwife Katie and welcome to Hannah!

Our 2023 Voyage Families picnic was such a lovely time to catch up and marvel at how our clients’ babies have grown! Youngest baby was 6(!!!) days old and our oldest doula baby present was 3 years old. Thanks for coming out and if we missed you, we hope to see you again next year… or because you’re coming back sooner for repeat services. ❤️

Guess who’s going to be a midwife?!

After a decade of dreaming and several years of intense preparation, Katie was accepted to UBC Midwifery today. All the hours of studying anatomy and physiology, rewriting application essays, and perfecting interview questions - not to mention attending 100 births in her doula career - paid off. She did it!

Tonight, we celebrate.
(Tomorrow, we restructure a business!)

This is the time to show her some love!!!

Expectations are powerful. When we listen to the only cultural views of birth and parenting, we hear that it’s an experience of fear, crisis, pain to be managed as quickly as possible, and something to just grit our teeth and get through because it’s the ticket to a baby.

If we start to dig deeper, to seek out a different story, we hear that birth can be beautiful. That it’s a perfectly normal human experience that we don’t need to fear. That it is massively challenging, but our bodies and intuitions are powerful to get us through. That labour can be joyful and empowering. That with good support and education, we can remain calm and ready for the twists and turns of the unknown.

But what we anticipate plays a huge role in the kind of birth we experience. The expectation of fear and pain leads to ACTUAL fear and pain. But that cycle can be broken, and we can come to birth anticipating peace, joy, and calm.

What kind of a narrative are you listening to? What are your expectations of birth? If you’re in a place of fear, expecting pain and struggle, we would love to help you change that. Registration is open for our March/ April prenatal class in North Vancouver.

Almost all the February babies are already here so we both got to go dancing tonight for Suzi’s belated birthday! Staying out late for reasons other than work is pretty fun.
