Let me re-introduce myself! šŸ‘‹

I’m Dr. Craig Best, a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) and Interventional Pain Medicine physician practicing in Vancouver and North Vancouver, BC.

My focus is the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of spine, orthopaedic, musculoskeletal, and neurologic injuries and pain conditions.

Here’s my path to get here:

šŸŽ“ BSc in Exercise & Health Physiology — Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary
šŸŽ“ Medical school — Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee
šŸ„ PM&R Residency — Rush University Medical Center in Chicago
šŸ„ Interventional Pain Medicine Fellowship — Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston

I’m board certified in PM&R and Pain Medicine through the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (ABPM&R) as well as PM&R through the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. I also carry the designation of Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC).

Those are the credentials. Here’s what it means for you:

I trained at some of North America’s top academic medical centres so that I could bring that level of expertise to patients in Vancouver without the waitlist, without the referral maze, and without anyone telling you to just live with the pain.

Epidemiology must be kept in mind when diagnosing and treating spine and musculoskeletal pain conditions. It’s not to say that piriformis syndrome should be forgotten, but let’s rule in or rule out the lumbosacral spine before honing in on a small deep hip rotator.

Orthobiologics certainly have the ability to help patients with spine and musculoskeletal pain conditions, but healthcare professionals claiming they can actually grow new cartilage, ligament, tendon, etc. is just plain false!

If weekly sessions 1-46 of IMS or trigger point injections haven’t gotten you back in the game, do we think session #47 is gonna be the big breakthrough?! šŸ˜¬šŸ¤ØšŸ¤”

As an interventional physiatrist/Pain Medicine doc, imaging is very important and useful in my practice. It’s useful to rule out super serious issues such as fractures, infections, and malignancies. It may be important to help me plan an injection. Finally, in some cases, imaging may help confirm a suspected diagnosis. However, for certain causes of spine pain, it doesn’t play much of a role in diagnosis. Facet joint pain is one of those conditions.
