Sepsis can escalate fast, and the early signs are easy to miss.

Watch for slurred speech or confusion, extreme shivering, no urine output, severe breathlessness, a sense that something is seriously wrong, or mottled skin. Any of these warrants immediate medical attention.

1 in 5 deaths worldwide is associated with sepsis.

Sepsis affects an estimated 47–50 million people each year, with at least 11 million deaths — equivalent to one death every 2.8 seconds. Yet awareness of sepsis remains low in many parts of the world. Early recognition and timely treatment are critical to improving outcomes.

No diabetes. No hypertension. No high cholesterol. No smoking history. By every standard measure, these women would be classified as low risk for cardiovascular disease.

A 30-year study of 12,530 women found otherwise. Elevated hsCRP predicted significantly higher cardiovascular risk, even when every traditional risk factor came back clear. Women with hsCRP >3 mg/L had 77% higher risk of coronary heart disease, 52% higher risk of total cardiovascular events, and 39% higher risk of stroke.

We're proud to share that our RAMP® technology is the foundation for ACTIS, a new portable device selected by the Canadian Space Agency to help assess astronauts' blood clot risk onboard the International Space Station.

Accurate diagnostics shouldn't stop at Earth's atmosphere. Through ACTIS, the CSA is exploring the potential of D-dimer detection using Response Biomedical's RAMP® technology in space and beyond.

ACTIS is scheduled to be launched and tested during CSA astronaut Joshua Kutryk's mission in 2026.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis examined the association between HbA1c variability and the risk of diabetic kidney disease and diabetic retinopathy. Across 45 cohort studies involving more than 172,000 participants, greater HbA1c variability was associated with adverse renal and retinal outcomes.

These findings highlight an important consideration in diabetes management: looking at HbA1c trends over time, not just a single measurement, may provide a more complete picture of glycemic control.
