We are using executive functioning skills all the time, in order to reach our daily goals efficiently and in a timely manner. We may not be aware of them, as they may be already automatic habits.
However, some people are not aware of the need to use executive functions, or have weak executive functions, which impedes their ability to reach their daily goals.
I see many kids in my practice, who get easily distracted, who cannot initiate of attend to their current task, who make careless mistakes that frustrate them and that can’t use time efficiently to carry out their daily tasks. Their parents are usually exhausted prompting them over and over again, because w/o prompting, their kids don’t initiate. With the parents’ frustration, comes shame, low sense of self-efficacy, and low self-esteem, as those kids keep being given negative feedback and criticism.
This is when KidSkills OT can help and change the trajectory for both of those kids and parents. We use an evidence-based structured, play-based and strength-based intervention model, that leads to increased awareness and strategy use.
Just working with those kids is not enough. This is why our intervention is triadic: parent-child-therapist, and this is why we also work directly with the parents, and support them on this journey.
We highly recommend early intervention.
