You can hold a boundary and still be a caring person. Those aren't in conflict—even though it can feel that way when your job is built around being available.

A boundary in a busy fall season might sound like: "I can help with that next week" instead of tonight. "I need to leave on time today." "I don't have it in me to take this one on."

None of those make you less dedicated. They make your care sustainable.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and Orange Shirt Day.

It's a day to honour the children who survived the residential school system, and to remember those who did not come home. It's also a day to sit with the reality that this isn't only history—the impacts of residential schools continue across generations, in families and communities across this country.

As someone whose work is grounded in trauma-informed care, I think often about how trauma doesn't stay contained to one person or one moment. It moves through families. It shapes nervous systems before a person has any language for what they're carrying. Many of the nurses, social workers, and first responders I work with carry the weight of this directly—through their own family histories, or through the communities they serve.

I'll be taking time to reflect, to listen, and to learn. I'd encourage you to do the same.

If you're looking for ways to learn more or support survivors and their families, the Indian Residential School Survivors Society and the Orange Shirt Society are both good places to start. The National Indian Residential School Crisis Line (1-866-925-4419) is available 24/7 for anyone affected.

Fall has a particular kind of momentum. Schedules fill back up. Everyone needs something. And if you're a nurse, therapist, social worker, or first responder, "everyone" doesn't stop at your caseload—it follows you home.

A boundary isn't a wall. It's just an honest answer to "what do I actually have capacity for right now."

You're allowed to give that honest answer, even in a busy season. Especially in a busy season.

If boundaries are something you want to get better at holding, a free 15-minute consult is a good place to start. Link in bio.

You spend your workday attuned to everyone else's needs before they even ask.

It makes sense that this shows up at home too—checking in on your partner, your kids, your friends, before you've checked in with yourself.

Authentic connection needs two people showing up as themselves. Not one person managing the emotional temperature of the room.

Curious what it looks like to bring more of yourself into your relationships? Book a free consult—link in bio.

At work, you adapt. You read what the moment needs and become that—calm, steady, whatever the situation calls for.

That skill is valuable. It's also easy to bring home without noticing.

In relationships, "what do you need from me" can start to crowd out "what do I actually feel here." Over time, it gets harder to tell where your role ends and you begin.

Staying yourself in relationship isn't about being less caring. It's about letting the people close to you see the parts of you that aren't managing anything.

If this hits close to home, a free 15-minute consult is a good place to start untangling it. Link in bio.

"I'm fine" is a professional reflex for a lot of nurses, therapists, and first responders.

It's the answer that keeps a shift moving. It's also the answer that can quietly bury what's actually going on underneath it.

Emotions don't always show up as clear, nameable feelings first. Sometimes they show up as a tight jaw. A shallow breath. Restlessness you can't place.

Before you can name what you feel, it can help to just notice where you feel it.

Curious what this looks like in a session? Book a free consult—link in bio.

You can read a room in seconds. A shift in someone's breathing, a change in tone, the thing they didn't say.

But when someone asks how you're doing, the honest answer is often: "I don't actually know."

Not because you don't feel things. Because you've spent years trained to notice everyone else's state first—and your own gets checked last, if at all.

Reconnecting with your own emotions isn't a soft skill you're missing. It's a muscle that's been pointed outward for so long, it needs practice pointed back at you.

If this sounds familiar, a free 15-minute consult is a low-pressure place to start. Link in bio.

If you work in crisis response or care, you've probably second-guessed yourself more times than you can count.

Not because you were wrong. Because you're used to your judgment being reviewed, questioned, cross-checked—so it starts to feel unsafe to trust it on your own.

Rebuilding self-trust doesn't mean ignoring your training. It means noticing that your read on a situation—and on yourself—is data too.

This week, a vigil is planned on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery — on šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl'e7énḵ Square, ground the City named jointly with the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations specifically as a place for mourning and cultural gathering as part of its commitment to reconciliation.

It's being held to memorialize Charlie Kirk. It's being organized by Drea Humphrey, a Rebel News reporter whose own documentary and reporting have spent years arguing that the unmarked graves found at former residential school sites are unproven.

This week, some of you are grieving Kirk. Some of you are grieving generations of children. I don't believe those two things can share the same steps.

Holding a memorial for Kirk, organized by someone who has built a public career disputing what happened to those children, on the ground the City marked for their mourning, is a use of that space I don't support.

If this week has stirred something up for you — grief, anger, or both at once — that's welcome here.

If you feel the same, the City needs to hear it, not just see it on social media. Email Mayor Sim and Council directly and ask what the City is doing to consult the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations about this use of the site.
