🎉 Congratulations to Jaclyn Lam who was selected to receive the 2026 Canadian Society of Echocardiography Distinguished Sonographer Award!

Jaclyn is a cardiac sonographer and clinical educator at the Vancouver General Hospital, working within DCI’s Centre for AI, Data Science, Imaging, and Precision Medicine. The CSE Annual Achievement Awards recognize Canadian cardiologists who have made significant contributions to echocardiography in leadership, teaching or research.

Cardiac rehabilitation, i.e. structured exercise, education, and monitoring after a heart event, is proven to reduce the risk of a second cardiac event. But for many Indigenous patients, accessing rehab means travelling to a facility in a city that may be hours away, in a system that may not feel safe or culturally appropriate.

DCI's Dr. Miles Marchand, working in partnership with the Musqueam Nation, developed Strong Hearts: the first on-reserve cardiac rehabilitation program in Canada.

The program brings cardiac testing, supervised exercise, specialist consultations, and heart health education directly into the Musqueam community.

💡Valve replacement is the primary treatment for aortic valve disease. This commonly uses bioprosthetic valves which degenerate over time. Such degeneration is a growing challenge as more and younger patients are having valve replacements - what happens to these valves over tim — and what does that mean for treating patients when they eventually need a second intervention?

🗓️ On Sept 9, join Dr. Stephanie Sellers, who leads DCI's Centre for Cardiovascular Translational Science and Medtech Innovation, as she discusses the pathological processes that cause both transcatheter and surgical bioprosthetic valves to degenerate — and how understanding those mechanisms shapes the way clinicians approach redo procedures like valve-in-valve TAVR.

🗓️ Mark your calendars: VanSCAD 2026 is coming September 18-20, in-person and virtual!

Now in its 8th year, this year's format will be similar to last, with the additional major theme on Non-Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease (NOCAD) including MINOCA (Myocardial Infarction with Non-Obstructive Coronary Arteries) and INOCA (Ischemia with Non-Obstructive Coronary Arteries). A team of SCAD and NOCAD experts internationally will be on faculty in person to provide a contemporary update on SCAD & MINOCA/INOCA.

The VGH SCAD Program is part of the Dilawri Cardiovascular Institute Centre for Women's Heart Health Research, and VanSCAD 2026 is co-organized by DCI's Dr. Jacqueline Saw (Course Director) and Dr. Tara Sedlak (Course Co-Director).

🔴 When cardiovascular disease reaches a crisis point — a heart attack, cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock — the patients who need the most urgent care come to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at VGH.

🏥 The CICU is the clinical hub of DCI's Centre for Cardiac Critical Care, providing acute care to the most critically ill cardiac patients from across British Columbia. Led by Dr. Christopher Fordyce, the Centre provides acute care to the sickest cardiac patients from across BC, integrating front-line treatment with clinical research to improve outcomes for future patients too.

🎉 Great news! -AFNET 11 recently hit a major milestone, enrolling its 400th patient.

EASThigh-AFNET 11 is a groundbreaking an international study investigating whether the benefits of early catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation equally benefits patients at higher baseline risk.

AF is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Many patients with AF suffer cardiovascular events, especially heart failure events, stroke, and cardiovascular death, often affecting elderly patients with comorbidities. The study is evaluating whether minimally invasive catheter ablation reduces cardiovascular events compared to usual care.

For Dr. Jason Andrade, who leads DCI’s Centre for Heart Rhythm, EASThigh is an incredibly important study that aims to address an area of uncertainty.

"We know that early AF ablation is valuable for patients with newly diagnosed AF, with a strong evidence base in younger and healthier patients. The question is whether this is also true for older patients with more comorbidities." — Dr. Jason Andrade

Cardiac rehabilitation can decrease cardiovascular mortality by 26% and hospital readmissions by 18%. Despite its proven benefits, only 34% of eligible Canadian patients participate in cardiac rehabilitation services. 🫀

In a new study co-authored by Dr. Nate Moulson, director of DCI's Centre for Cardiovascular Health and Prevention, investigators assess the current state of cardiac rehabilitation services across British Columbia and the Yukon — and identify what it would take to close the gap.

Some of the proposed solutions include:

🏥 A comprehensive provincial service delivery model aligned with cardiac rehabilitation guidelines, including evidence-based clinical practice, defined program models, access benchmarks, and performance outcome measurements
💻 Expanded adoption of virtual care to reach rural and underserved communities
📊 Better provincial data collection to understand wait times, patient volumes, and unmet need
