🚨 Traction alopecia is one of the few types of hair loss that is largely preventable.
Traction alopecia is caused by repeated tension on the hair follicles over time. Constant pulling can inflame and weaken the follicles, leading to thinning, a receding hairline, or bald patches. If the tension continues for too long, the follicles can become permanently damaged.
Common causes include:
• Tight ponytails, buns, and braids
• Sew-ins or extensions that are installed too tightly
• Half wigs with combs or clips pulling in the same area every day
• Tight wig grips or adhesive that places repeated stress on the hairline
• Frequent use of tight protective styles without giving the scalp time to recover
The good news? 🌿 If caught early, traction alopecia can often improve.
The first step is removing the source of tension and allowing the scalp and hair follicles an opportunity to recover. Rotating hairstyles, wearing looser styles, and avoiding repeated pulling in the same area can make a significant difference.
If you’ve noticed thinning around your hairline, temples, or where your wig clips or combs sit, don’t ignore it. The sooner it’s addressed, the better your chances of protecting your follicles from further damage.
At Alopecia & Beyond, we assess the health of your scalp and hair follicles to help determine what’s contributing to your hair loss and recommend the most appropriate next steps based on your individual situation.
