FREE Resources Alert! 🚨

Did you know the local library stocks many books that cover topics like emotional regulation, sensory seeking anxiety, ADHD and more?

Sometimes it’s helpful for kids to hear stories about other kids experiencing similar things.

From an OT perspective, books like these can be a great conversation starter so your child feels like they can ask questions, learn about difficult situations, or understand feelings in a safe space with a trusted adult.

Some books even come with a QR code to free resource sheets that help you and your child build skills together!

When children are still building their vocabulary, too many questions can act as a “roadblock” to conversation. ❌

They may not know how to say the answer to your question or may respond with “yes” or “no” only!

What to do instead? 👇

Each time you are tempted to ask a question during your play or daily interaction, try thinking “What do I want my child to say back to me?” and model those words instead!
For example:

🐝 Instead of saying “What’s that?”, you can say “Car!That’s a red car. Car is going down, it is so fast! Beep Beep!”
🐝 Point to the door and say “Door, open/close” alongside the action of opening and closing the door.
🐝 Try other forms of communication like AAC devices, sign language, picture references alongside the object your child is playing (e.g our SLP Megan signing ‘octopus’ alongside an image) to further support language development.

The art of Scootering 💁‍♀️

Scooter boards are a fan favourite tool in pediatric therapy for so many reasons, but here’s a few reasons why we like incorporating scooters in session:

1: They are FUN. Kids learn and practice skills more when it’s fun (so do adults).

2: In physiotherapy, scooters are great for practicing a number of things: alternating leg motions, sitting posture, whole body strengthening and endurance, vestibular input and proprioception, push/pull motions, balance - the list goes on!

3: Some children crave movement and use it as a form of regulation between practicing other skills in session.

4: Scooter boards provide opportunities for modelling functional language like ‘go’, ‘push’, ‘stop’ and encourages joint engagement in speech therapy.

May is Speech and Hearing month! 🗣️

For the next 30 days our goal is to spread more knowledge and awareness around communication health, which means we will share more about our wonderful SLP’s, conditions and concerns commonly addressed in speech therapy, types of communication, evidence-based tips and strategies, neuro-affirming activities to try, etc.

Stay tuned, and make sure to high-five your SLP and Audiology friends this month for everything they do! 🙏
