I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how easy it is to overlook the “small” injuries at work.
A quick cut. A sore back. Something in your eye that feels like “it’ll pass.”
Most of us brush it off and keep going. Deadlines don’t wait, and neither does the job.
But here’s the thing—those small injuries are often the ones that turn into bigger problems when we ignore them.
Some of the most common workplace injuries I see or hear about are:
- Minor cuts and scrapes
- Eye irritation from dust or debris
- Muscle strains from lifting or repetitive motion
- Burns (especially in industrial or kitchen settings)
They might seem routine, but how you respond in those first few minutes really matters.
For cuts and scrapes: clean it right away, apply pressure if needed, and cover it properly. Infection is the real enemy here.
For eye irritation: don’t rub it. Flush with clean water or saline and get help if it doesn’t clear. Your eyes are not something to gamble with.
For strains: stop and rest. Pushing through can turn a minor tweak into something that sidelines you for weeks.
For burns: cool the area under running water and avoid applying creams unless it’s appropriate first aid. When in doubt, get it checked.
None of this is complicated—but it does require one thing we often skip: taking a moment to care for ourselves.
Safety isn’t just about policies or equipment. It’s about habits. It’s about choosing to slow down for a minute so you can keep going for the long run.
If there’s one takeaway, it’s this: don’t ignore the small stuff. Your future self will thank you for it.
