Have you ever felt like there are completely different versions of you inside?
One version is quiet and responsible.
Another is angry, impulsive, or fearless.
And another one feels calm, confident, and strong.
The Three Faces of Eve tells a fascinating story about a woman who seemed to have three very different personalities.
Eve White was shy, quiet, and always trying to be the “good” wife and mother.
Eve Black was completely different. She was confident, outgoing, emotional, and wanted freedom. She did things that Eve White would never allow herself to do.
Then came Jane — calmer, more mature, and more balanced.
The doctors eventually discovered that Eve had experienced severe trauma during childhood. Her mind had developed different ways of coping with experiences that felt too painful and overwhelming.
And this is what makes the story so interesting:
Sometimes the parts of ourselves that we dislike are not “bad.”
They may be parts of us that learned to survive.
The quiet part may have learned:
“Stay safe. Don't make trouble.”
The angry part may have learned:
“I have to protect myself.”
The strong part may have learned:
“I can handle this.”
Of course, having different moods or sides of yourself does not mean you have DID. Most people naturally behave differently in different situations.
But Eve's story reminds us of something important:
Our minds can create powerful ways to protect us when life becomes too painful.
Instead of asking,
“What's wrong with me?”
Sometimes we can ask:
“What happened to me that made me need this part of myself?”
And that question can be the beginning of healing. 🤍
The Three Faces of Eve was published as a book in 1957 and later became a film starring Joanne Woodward. The real woman behind the story later revealed that her experience was much more complicated than the movie suggested.
