Last night Chan Centre at UBC along with Centre for Climate Justice hosted Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor to discuss their new book END TIMES FASCISM and the fight for the living world. Canadians are often complacent about politics, yet now is the time for showing up in community, to inspire people, to protect our earth and all living things. As Naomi shared, when Mark Carney spoke about peering into the shop window at Davos, he was speaking to the global elite, mostly Americans and AI tech. Look at what’s for sale. Canada has some sexy bitumen at low cost, copper, uranium, LNG and dirty fossil fuel. Canada is NOT Costco and this is NOT the first betrayal of our government. Bill C-39 is fascist legislation that will bulldoze indigenous, environmental and workers’ rights. Please email or call your MP. Get involved. Go to a protest. Oppose the pipeline that will destroy the Southern orca population. BC is a paradise with so much natural beauty. Let us rise up to protect it from corporate greed and private equity. Recently, I have been sensing the close presence of my Mom, who died in 1989. It’s hard to explain, but her spirit moves through me. My Mom advocated for the underdog, for those who were left behind. There is also my Doukhobor heritage on my Dad’s side. My Grama Esakin protested in public and even went to jail for standing up to the government. God consistently calls me to care about the Palestinians. He drives me to learn through reading and listening to interviews with scholars. Through Jesus’s example, I attend the Saturday protests against the genocide of Palestinians because I know the battle is not only in Palestine, it is in our communities as well.

In Norse mythology, Fylgja is a female supernatural guardian spirit for the family. Fylgja represents the spirits of the ancestral mothers amongst the Vikings.

Muffy was and is our family’s Fylgja. She took care of us all, through thick and thin, from the day we took her home from the Whatcom Humane Society 18 years ago. She was there for all the moments of sadness, joy, anger, anxiety and hardships. She even watched over our pet chickens and tolerated our new kitty, Manny.

Muffy, our beloved Fylgja, we know your spirit will remain with us forever but we are so heartbroken to say goodbye.

We love you Muffy. You will be dearly missed.❤️😿

The sunrise at Willows Beach today is really beyond words. The opening act, encompassing all the diverse shades of autumn red, has stolen the show from the star attraction 🌞. The panoramic view from our neighbourhood shoreline bears witness to the Cascade range in the east, Mount Baker in the northeast, Mount Rainier in the south and the Olympic mountains in the southwest. Natural landscapes speak the language of mystery and wonder for a world that is ours to tenderly hold.

On a weekend hike with dear friends from Edmonton, we came across this heart stone along the path. My affection for hearts finds the unexpected in the natural landscape of wonder and awe. 💚 Recycle the energy of love by witnessing people through the eyes of our Creator, as equals, no life greater than another. Peace instead of violence. Compassion instead of revenge. Love in lieu of hate. Imagine the kind of world we could create.
