Are you ready for blackberry season this summer? 😋

Late July and August are usually prime times for food foragers on Vancouver Island because blackberries are ripe for the picking!

Blackberries (Hei Mei in Chinese PinYin) are jam-packed with plenty of healing properties from a TCM perspective. Blackberries are particularly beneficial to soothe sore throats and clear phlegmy coughs when used medicinally in a tea or syrup form.

Blackberries also rank highly among fruits for antioxidant strength, plus they are delicious. Happy harvesting!

FLAVOUR PROFILE: Sweet, aromatic, licorice & pungent.
This unsung hero, Star Anise, (Chinese: 八角, bājiǎo "eight-horn") is a spice made from the fruit of the Chinese evergreen tree Illicium verum. It is antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and so much more!
If you tend to run cold add star anise to your favourite broth (or add it to your mulled wine). Stay cozy and warm this winter!

Black & salty is the flavour profile for the winter season in TCM! Did you know that winter is also associated with the kidneys?
Tonify your kidneys with black sesame seeds, kelp, seaweed, black beans, miso and soy sauce. Now is the time for delicious homemade soups with rich broths of miso and any of the above ingredients... and parsley in everything!
