Rough play isn’t always aggression ❤️
Today while getting to know a new kiddo, they were really into rough play and wanted to throw the peanut ball at me.
I know that might make some parents immediately think, “Is this aggression?”
But for me, it’s an opportunity to learn.
In a safe and controlled environment, I can see what happens when I say, “That was too hard.”
Can they adjust?
Can they be more gentle?
Do they notice my reaction?
Can they respect a boundary or take a break?
It also gives me a chance to understand why they’re seeking that kind of play. Is it sensory input? Movement? Excitement? Connection? Or simply something they find fun?
Of course, safety and boundaries still matter. Rough play doesn’t mean someone gets to be hurt.
But I don’t want to automatically label a behaviour as “aggression” without first understanding it.
Sometimes the things that make us pause are actually some of the best opportunities to learn about a child.
