Island Sexual Health observes the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia because stigma and discrimination are direct barriers to health and well-being; fuelling fear, shame, and exclusion. This prevents many 2SLGBTQ+ individuals from accessing the care, education, and support they deserve.

By recognizing this day, we affirm that equitable, inclusive healthcare and education is a right for all, inclusive of orientation and gender identity. It’s a moment to stand in solidarity, challenge harmful biases, and commit to creating safer spaces where everyone feels seen, respected, and empowered to express and care for themselves without fear.

Health equity begins with dignity. Each person has the opportunity and responsibility to support dignity and equity.

May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, Girls & Two-Spirit People in Canada. It is widely recognized as Red Dress Day. Red Dress Day is an annual event held by the REDress project to raise awareness and honour missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people (MMIWG2S). The idea originated from Metis artist Jaime Black, who created a public art installation in 2010 by hanging red dresses in public spaces to bring more attention to the violence faced by Indigenous women and girls. Each empty dress symbolizes an Indigenous woman or girl who should be here and able to wear the dress but instead that has been taken away.

Since November, ISH CHC have been humbled and inspired by the support of , .burlesque and the many talented performers who have developed, produced, and performed drag and burlesque shows in support of s*xual health and, most importantly, our clients. These events have raised more than $8400 and have celebrated art, s*xualites, identities, expression, diversity, pride, connection, resistance, and community - the foundations of vibrant communities and why we do the work we do.

Thank you to all involved: Sloane with Brick and Lavender, Victoria Burlesque, the talented performers, the production folks including the hosts, venues: Ollie Quinn and Felicitas, and of course, the audience members.

On this Provincial day of mourning, we extend our deepest condolences and hold space for all affected by the recent tragic events in Tumbler Ridge.

As a community health centre, we recognize that connection and collective care can be essential sources of strength in times of tragedy, loss and trauma.

We encourage folks to reach out to support networks/services and remember that you do not have to navigate your experience alone.

A list of available support resources can be found on the 2nd slide.
