Do trees change careers?
When a tree falls, the log slowly soaks up water like a giant sponge. Moss grows on it. Fungi, mushrooms, insects, salamanders, and so much more use it as shelter. That attracts predators like bears and birds looking for a tasty snack.
Seedlings sprout right on top because the log is full of nutrients and lifted above the dark forest floor. The decomposing tree becomes a launchpad for the next generation.
Over the decades, it breaks down, feeding surrounding plants and the soil, storing carbon, and helping the whole ecosystem thrive.
