What if you could get all of your postpartum care, for the first couple of weeks, at home?
What if you didn’t have to get out of your pajamas, or sit in a car, or time your babies feed to coincide with an outing?
At home visits Registered Midwives:

🏠check on healing from delivery (any sutures, checking for signs of infection)

🏠check blood pressure (sometimes this can rise in pregnancy or postpartum

🏠check on parental mood

🏠assess uterine involution (is the uterus shrinking back down)

🏠 listen to baby’s heart and lungs

🏠 listen to parental concerns and answer questions

🏠 assess umbilical cord healing

🏠weigh baby and calculate weight loss / gain and make recommendations or encouragement accordingly

🏠 assess newborn output

🏠draw bloodwork if indicated (for example checking bilirubin levels in the newborn)

Why do we do all of this?? We’ll answer that in another post!

Is that we deliver babies at home….

You might be surprised to know that

💚 most midwives attend significantly more deliveries hospital than at home
💚 every practice will have different rates of home and hospital births, our practice is about 90% hospital and 10% home
💚midwives are covered by MSP no matter where you birth (you don’t pay anything)
💚 anyone giving birth in BC is registered at the local hospital, or the hospital the midwife has privileges in
💚 that’s right, midwives have hospital privileges! Just like doctors!
💚 midwives can get prescribe / consult for an epidural when they want one (same as a doctor - we consult our anesthesia colleagues to administer them)
💚 midwives support YOUR choice of birth place

💚💚💚 bonus - we do home visits for the first 7-10 days after your baby is born (regardless of where@you give birth) so you aren’t trying to get to clinic appointments with a newborn!

The truth is, BC midwives offer choice of birth place - meaning if someone is healthy and low risk, they can SAFELY choose home-birth or hospital-birth (anyone can choose to both outside of standard guidelines, but we will save the information about that for another day)

Did you know that registered midwives in BC have an exceptionally high burnout rate?
In a study done from 2017-2018 by Stoll & Gallagher (2018) 40% of BC midwives reported seriously considered leaving the profession in the 12 months leading up to its data collection and 1 in 10 were actively making plans to leave.
In other research, one of the things that decreased job satisfaction was lack of continuity of care models

What does care provider burnout look like?

👉🏻 loss of compassion
👉🏻 lowered attention to detail
👉🏻 difficulty concentrating
👉🏻 poor sleep
👉🏻 anxiety
👉🏻 experiencing physical pain and ailments

Just to name a few….

By working in teams of 3-5 our midwives can obtain work:life balance and show up for our clients as their best selves. We reduce burnout by facilitating adequate time off call and taking time away allowing us to operate at our best capacity when we are on!!
We can also put the time into our families and ourselves that we all deserve 💕
We love that in this team size (and with the help of our admin) we can meet and spend time with each client there by ensuring we still maintain continuity of care

Another comment I often hear when I tell people I’m a midwife “oh ya, I had a doctor because I didn’t want to give birth at home and wanted all the drugs!!!”

Did you know?

⭐️ Registered Midwives have hospital 🏥privileges in British Columbia (same as doctors do)

⭐️ We can order pharmacological pain management (epidurals, narcotics etc) for clients in labour - YOU choose how you want to give birth

⭐️ Registered midwives in British Columbia are very well integrated into the health care system and hospital

⭐️ Our midwives have fantastic relationships with our inter-professional colleagues

⭐️ Midwives are primary care providers with 4 years of training (a Bachelor of Midwifery) through the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia

⭐️ Midwives offer homebirths as part of their informed choice of birth place, and for those that choose it, they are still registered at the hospital and the hospital is aware when they are in labour (more on this and how homebirth is kept safe on another post)

Myth busting time!!!

I still get asked FREQUENTLY “how much does it cost to have a midwife??”

⭐️ Registered Midwives are covered by MSP

⭐️ If you have a care card number or usually receive medical services from a doctor in BC without paying - you don’t have to pay for a Midwife!

⭐️ Midwifery has been regulated in British Columbia since 1998

⭐️ You DON’T need a referral to receive midwifery care! You can just contact a Midwife’s office directly to receive care

⭐️ Midwives order blood tests, ultrasounds and medications!

⭐️ You can have a baby in hospital with a Registered midwife! (Or at home, if you prefer)

⭐️ Midwives are primary care providers for babies up until 6 weeks old

⭐️ If a complication comes up and you will have access to additional care providers as needed (your team gets bigger)
