🎸 Ready to ship!

The CanAssist Guitar Strummer is designed to help people with limited or no use of one side of their body play a guitar independently. Using a foot-controlled strumming pedal, participants can strum while using one hand to play chords. This technology makes it possible for everyone to be able to play, create, and share music.

We had a great time at Ship Point 👏

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to learn more, ask questions, and give our technology a try. It was great connecting with the community and sharing more info on our assistive tech.

Special shout-out to our co-op students for their hard work setting up, running, and packing up the event, and to Paul and Victoria for helping make the day such a success!

We're also grateful to University of Victoria for providing us with the opportunity to be part of this community space. Keep an eye out, we will be back at Ship Point over the coming months with more assistive technology demos 👀 We hope to see you there!

Yesterday was Disability Independence Day, and CanAssist wants to celebrate the importance of independence, inclusion, and accessibility for all 💕

Disability Independence Day is recognized every year on July 26th to commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and celebrates the progress made towards inclusion. It's also a reminder that disability can happen at any stage of life. Whether through injury, illness, or aging, everyday accessibility and inclusive design benefit everyone.

The people featured in these photos are examples of what independence can look like. Jacob participated in an interview as part of the CanWork BC youth tool and shared his experiences to help improve employment resources. Paul received assistive tech through CanAssist, helping him complete tasks with greater independence.

We had a visit from the Science Venture Mini Makers campers on Wednesday! 🔨

Co-op students Aashna, Walter, and Morgan had a great time showing the group around, sharing some of the assistive technologies we work on, and giving them a behind-the-scenes of the CanAssist workshop.

We're excited to welcome more Science Venture groups in the coming weeks and inspire the next generation of innovative minds! 🌟🧠

Paul, our Head of Inclusive Tech and Systems, attended the Jays Care Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday! 🩵⚾

Paul was stationed at hole #1 for the day to demo CanAssist's Bat Sw***er and to let attendees have a try. The event raises funds in support of Challengers Baseball, an adaptive baseball program for youth with disabilities. An ambassador player for the challenger league, Jasper, as well as B.C. challenger league representatives provided help and collaborated with us during the event.

Thank you to Paul for representing us and thank you to our co-op students Walter and Morgan for ensuring the Bat Sw***er was ready to go for the event!

Inclusion in action ☄

Last week, CanAssist visited Bryson at his elementary school to try out a switch-accessible dodgeball launcher our tech team developed. We brought it into the school and set it up on the field so he could use it with his peers, along with his teacher and occupational therapist.

It was a sunny day outside, and his classmates were excited and fully engaged. Bryson was right in the middle of the action, launching dodgeballs back and forth, and having a great time!

A huge thank you to The Air Canada Foundation for helping make innovative, inclusive experiences like this possible. ❤️
