One of the things I wanted when I created the Horizon Center hypnotherapy training was flexibility.

Not everyone learns the same way.

Some people want to move steadily through the 28-unit core curriculum on their own schedule.

Others want lots of live interaction, practice and feedback.

Some want extra workshops in areas that particularly interest them.

And sometimes you simply hit a point where you want to sit down with me one-on-one and say, “Okay, help me think this through.”

So the training is designed with a strong, comprehensive self-paced foundation, and then you can add the support and learning opportunities that are useful to you.

That can include Ask Me Anything sessions, live workshops, supervised practice, Inside the Session, memberships, individual training and other opportunities as they’re offered.

You don’t have to consume everything.

You don’t have to learn according to somebody else’s schedule.

You can build the training experience that supports the kind of hypnotherapist you want to become.

If you’d like to see how I teach before making a decision, you can explore the first two units free:

Why do people keep repeating a response they genuinely want to change?

Why does the mind keep reaching for sugar, staying awake too late, overthinking, procrastinating, or becoming vigilant even when the person knows it is not helping?

In my free live class, Why You Still Feel Stuck, I will explain how the subconscious learns protective responses and why those responses can continue long after the original situation has passed.

We will look at:

• Why symptoms make sense in context
• How subconscious associations are formed
• Why time does not automatically update old beliefs
• Why willpower and surface solutions often fall short
• How hypnosis works with cause rather than only managing symptoms

This class is open to the public.

It is also a good opportunity to experience how I teach and how I approach hypnosis.

When I created my hypnotherapy training, I didn't want to teach students a collection of scripts and techniques and then send them out into the world hoping their clients behaved according to the script.

Because clients don't do that.

After more than 25 years of working with real clients, one of the most important things I've learned is that two people can come in with what looks like the same problem and have completely different subconscious reasons for it.

So I teach my students how to think through a session.

How to listen for what's important.

How to recognize patterns.

How to understand what the subconscious may be trying to accomplish.

And how to choose and adapt their approach to the individual sitting in front of them.

The 28-unit core training is completely self-paced, but you're not left alone with a pile of videos. There are plenty of opportunities for live learning, practice, feedback, mentoring and individual support when you want them.

If you're curious about how I teach, you can try the first two units free before deciding whether the training is right for you.

September has always felt like a natural time to begin learning something new.

Even years after leaving school, there is still something about the end of summer that brings thoughts of fresh notebooks, new plans, and what we want to do next.

For the month of August, I am offering a private bonus for new students enrolling in the Horizon Center self-paced hypnotherapy training.

Enroll by August 31 and receive a complimentary 60-minute Private Training Support session with me.

We can use the hour to:

-Talk about your goals.

-Create a plan for moving through the course.

-Answer questions about the curriculum.

-Discuss professional association requirements.

-Explore a concept in more detail.

-Or give you personal guidance once you have begun working through the material.

The self-paced format gives you freedom.

The private session gives us a chance to begin with support focused entirely on you.

Have you ever had a reaction that seemed way bigger than the situation?

Maybe you got sick after eating something once and could barely look at it afterward.

Maybe you were embarrassed speaking in front of people and years later public speaking still makes you uneasy.

This is where association comes in.

The subconscious is protective, but it is not the logical part of the mind. It can quickly connect two things together and decide:

Good. Do more of that.

or

Bad. Avoid that.

The problem is that the association does not always make logical sense.

You may have had the flu when you ate shrimp, but the subconscious links shrimp with nausea.

You may have been embarrassed once while speaking in class, but the subconscious links public speaking with danger.

And once that association forms, it can continue influencing behavior long after the original event has passed.

This is Part 6 of Why We Do What We Do, and association is the third way I see the subconscious learn and choose behavior.

Sometimes the subconscious protects us from something that isn’t actually dangerous.

I once screamed and threw my bag because something suddenly jumped toward me on a dark, windy street.

The threat?

A plastic bag blowing in the wind.

My subconscious didn’t wait for my logical mind to examine the situation. It detected a possible threat and immediately reacted.

That same protective system can show up as anxiety.

The subconscious believes there may be a threat, so it creates vigilance. It wants you alert, watching and ready to respond.

The problem is that the subconscious is not logical. The threat it is responding to may be real, remembered, associated with something else, or no longer present at all.

That’s why I look at anxiety with curiosity.

What does the subconscious think it needs to protect you from?

This is Part 7 of Why We Do What We Do, and protection is the fourth way I see the subconscious choose behavior.

Perfectionism often looks like a desire to do things well.

But sometimes there is something else underneath it.

Imagine growing up with a parent or sibling who is frequently critical.

The subconscious may come to a simple conclusion:

If I’m perfect, nobody can criticize me.

So you work harder.

You correct yourself constantly.

You try to be more careful, more capable, more impressive.

But the criticism may continue because it was never really about you in the first place.

And that can create an exhausting loop where the subconscious keeps insisting:

Try harder. Be better. Then maybe you’ll finally be safe from criticism.

This is Part 8 of Why We Do What We Do, and it’s another example of the subconscious using a protective strategy that may have made sense when it was formed.
