Here’s Phoebe solving the same odour puzzle. Clearly hunting (which isn’t her strength and we’ve been working on) but looking to me for direction. I start with some praise and encouragement and then direct her out to the truck (then Griffin escapes from the house - he can open doors 🙄 and shows her where it is) BUT you can see when she goes past him hunting, she actually does catch odour and turn around on her own. So this is pretty cool to unpack because it tells me she was confident enough to work independently and not just go right to where Griffin was holding his disruptive nose freeze 🤪

What changes in your dog’s search strategy when you set hides in an area without any clear boundaries?

Nothing.

Arbitrary boundaries have no relevance to the dog when they’re searching for odour. They just don’t.

BUT the handler does have a responsibility to provide guidance and direction when there are boundaries or items that need to be covered without taking over and deteriorating the dog’s willingness and enthusiasm to work independently.

Knowing how to read and communicate effectively with your dog is key to successful searches.

And every dog is different in how much support they need to confidently solve a difficult odour problem.

Some need more reassurance and direction throughout a search while others only need you to step in when they ask for help.

But there is a difference between your dog giving up and asking you to do it for them and when they are simply asking for direction.

You need to be able to recognize the difference or you risk either leaving your dog hanging when they do need direction, or taking over and destroying their confidence.

The better you are at reading your dog, the more successful you will be as a team!

Here’s Griffin having a blast searching the yard for odour with very little interference from me followed by Phoebe who needed a bit more guidance.

Different dog, different team dynamics!

What does it take to train up a SAR dog? Time, Effort & Dedication, a sense of humour…and an affinity to getting tired, sore and dirty 😏
