Have you ever felt afraid or overwhelmed in a situation where you later realized there wasn't really anything dangerous happening?

Sometimes unresolved trauma can influence how we perceive what's happening around us.

I experienced this myself during a severe panic attack many years ago.

What made that experience different was having someone beside me who offered complete acceptance and loving support.

As I began feeling safer, my perception of the situation changed dramatically.

That experience helped me understand something important about PTSD recovery.

We can gradually learn to offer ourselves the same compassion, patience, and acceptance that helps us feel safe with others.

In Video 4 of my PTSD series, I explore this experience and share a simple mindfulness practice for reconnecting with our body sensations and developing greater inner safety.

Have you noticed how much easier difficult feelings can become when someone simply accepts what you're experiencing?

PTSD: How Past Trauma Changes Your Perception of Safety

Have you ever been somewhere perfectly ordinary, yet suddenly felt so anxious or unsafe that all you wanted to do was escape?

What's interesting is that sometimes the situation itself isn't particularly dangerous. It's the way our mind and body are interpreting what's happening.

When we experience something overwhelming, our subconscious mind may develop protective coping patterns to help us get through it.

But those patterns don't always recognize when our circumstances have changed.

I remember having a panic attack in a store many years ago. It felt like there were people everywhere, and I desperately needed to get out.

Fortunately, someone was with me who offered unconditional love and acceptance.

Because I felt supported rather than judged, I was able to become curious about what I was experiencing.

Eventually, when I looked around again, I realized the store was hardly crowded at all.

My perception had changed dramatically.

That experience helped me understand how powerfully our protective patterns can influence what we believe is happening around us.

In Video 3 of my PTSD series, I explore how these patterns develop, how they affect our sense of safety, and how mindfulness and self-compassion can help us gradually reconnect with the present moment.

Have you ever noticed that anxiety can make an ordinary situation feel much more threatening than it actually is?

Have you ever stopped to wonder how much of who you've become is truly you, and how much developed as a way of protecting yourself?

Maybe you've become someone who always tries to make others happy.

Perhaps you're extremely independent and rarely ask for help, even when you're struggling.

Or maybe you find yourself avoiding emotional closeness because being vulnerable feels uncomfortable or unsafe.

Sometimes these behaviours develop because of experiences earlier in life that were simply too painful or overwhelming to handle.

Our subconscious mind may develop protective coping patterns to help us avoid experiencing those feelings again.

And although these patterns may have helped us survive, they can continue influencing our lives many years later.

For example, becoming very independent may have helped you feel safe when you couldn't depend on others.

But today, that same independence might make it difficult to receive support or allow someone to get close to you.

Or perhaps people-pleasing helped you avoid conflict or rejection as a child, but now you struggle to express your needs or set healthy boundaries.

What's particularly interesting is that some of our greatest strengths can also have a limiting side.

In Video 2 of my PTSD series, I explore how unresolved trauma can shape our identity, self-worth, and relationships.

I also share a simple exercise to help you recognize which patterns have helped you develop positive qualities and which may now be holding you back.

The intention isn't to judge who you've become. It's to understand yourself with greater compassion and begin recognizing where you might want to make changes.

Something to reflect on:

Have you ever recognized that a quality you appreciate about yourself also creates difficulties in another area of your life?

Have you ever wondered why something from your past can still affect how you feel and react today, even when you thought you'd moved beyond it?

Maybe you experience anxiety, worry, fear, or emotional reactions that seem much stronger than the situation warrants.

When something happens that's too overwhelming to handle, our subconscious mind may develop protective coping patterns to help us survive. Sometimes that means disconnecting from feelings that were simply too painful to experience at the time.

But what happens when those protective patterns continue operating years later?

We may find ourselves interpreting everyday situations through fears and expectations that developed during those earlier experiences.

In my first video of the PTSD series, I explore how these patterns develop and why rebuilding a sense of inner safety is such an important starting point.

We'll also look at how mindfulness can help us gradually reconnect with our feelings and body sensations, without forcing ourselves to relive the past.

Have you ever noticed how an emotional reaction can feel much stronger than what is actually happening in the moment?

What if protecting your energy isn’t really about protecting yourself from other people — but about learning how to stay connected with yourself?

It can be tempting to think that if someone’s energy affects you, you need to put up stronger walls.

But walls can also separate us from experiencing life.

There’s another approach.

Become familiar with what you feel like when you’re grounded and present.

Then notice when something changes.

Maybe you suddenly feel drained.

Your anxiety increases.

You get pulled into someone else’s mood.

Or you simply stop feeling like yourself.

That awareness gives you a choice.

Come back to your breathing. Feel your body. Reconnect with yourself and ask: Where am I right now?

Throughout my Positive Energy Protection series, I’ve explored different parts of this process. In this final Video 10, I bring everything together:

Before an interaction — connect with yourself and set your intention.

During — notice when you’re being pulled away and come back to the present.

After — consciously complete the experience, clear what you don’t want to carry forward, and reconnect with yourself.

It doesn’t need to become complicated.

Sometimes it may simply be:

Notice. Breathe. Come back.

Have you ever left work, finished a difficult conversation, or walked away from a stressful situation — but realized you were still carrying it with you?

You’re home now, but part of you is still back there.

You’re replaying what happened.

Thinking about what someone said.

Feeling the stress in your body.

One way to imagine this is that you’re carrying a backpack throughout your day.

Every experience you don’t let go of gets put into it.

Eventually, that backpack becomes heavy.

When something is complete, take a few moments to acknowledge what happened. If there’s something you want to do differently next time, recognize it.

Then breathe.

Imagine clearing away the energy you no longer want to carry and reconnecting with your own energy.

Empty the backpack.

You don’t have to forget what happened. You’re simply recognizing that this part of your day is complete, and you’re moving into something new.

That’s what I explore in Video 9 of my Positive Energy Protection series.

Do you ever notice yourself carrying a conversation or experience long after it’s actually over?

Have you ever been talking with someone and suddenly noticed that you don’t feel like yourself anymore?

Maybe you’re getting drained.

The conversation has gone somewhere that doesn’t feel good.

Your anxiety is building.

Or you’ve simply become so caught up in what’s happening that you’ve lost the grounded feeling you had beforehand.

That moment of noticing is important.

Instead of continuing to get pulled along, take a breath.

Feel your breathing and your body.

Ask yourself: What was my intention going into this?

Do I need to adjust it?

Then imagine yourself and the interaction surrounded with light and bring yourself back to what’s happening right now.

You don’t have to figure everything out at once.

Just breathe through this moment, and then take the next step.

Video 8 of my Positive Energy Protection series explores what you can do during interactions to help stay present and keep your energy strong.

Have you ever gone into work, a social situation, or an interaction already carrying everything that happened earlier in your day?

Then you meet someone challenging, something doesn’t go as planned, and by the end you feel completely drained.

One thing that can help is becoming conscious of how you enter an interaction.

Before you go in, take a moment to clear what came before and ask yourself:

• How do I want to feel?

• What kind of person do I want to be in this situation?

• What might challenge me?

• What would it feel like if this went really well?

You can even imagine yourself afterwards thinking, “That felt really good.”

In Video 7 of my Positive Energy Protection series, I talk about setting intentions before interactions and consciously stepping into the role you want to bring to a situation.

It could be work, a job interview, meeting a friend, public speaking, or simply being around someone whose energy normally affects you.

Are you carrying yesterday's stress into the person you're talking to today?

Sometimes we focus so much on whether another person is draining our energy that we overlook something important: What was our energy like before we even encountered them?

Maybe you're still thinking about work. Maybe something upset you earlier. Maybe you're anxious about what is coming next.

If we never stop and clear some of that out, we can carry it from one situation to another all day.

In Video #6 of my Positive Energy Protection Series, I talk about what you can do before an interaction:

• Pause and breathe

• Ground yourself

• Notice what you're carrying

• Acknowledge unresolved feelings

• Let go of what you don't need right now

• Come back into the present

It doesn't need to become another complicated task. With practice, even a brief check-in can help you enter the next situation more connected with yourself.

Do you notice yourself carrying work, conversations or stressful experiences with you long after they're finished?

What’s quietly draining your energy?

Sometimes you know exactly what exhausted you.

Other times, you simply notice that you’re tired, irritable or emotionally depleted—and you’re not really sure why.

The cause may not be one big thing.

It could be several areas of your life continually taking a little more energy than they give back: your sleep, work, relationships, physical health, surroundings or something unresolved that keeps sitting in the background.

In Video #5 of my Positive Energy Protection series, I share a simple exercise you can use to create an “energy map” of your life.

Look at each important area and give it a score from 1–10.

Which areas restore you?

Which are fairly neutral?

And which ones continually leave you with less energy than you had before?

Sometimes simply seeing those patterns clearly can show you where change needs to begin.
