March is global Music Therapy Awareness month! I’m so grateful to work at Victoria Hospice where we are in full throws of celebration and education. Along with a three part inservice series for staff, we will have a display table in our lounge, media and marketing campaign.

Check out March’s feature story about Music Therapy on our Victoria Hospice website!

Music therapy at Victoria Hospice brings relaxation and comfort, regulates body rhythms, and decreases perception of pain.

Often in music therapy, we draw upon other creative arts to work in partnership with the music. These days I've been using a lot of poetry related interventions in my work with dementia care and seniors.

I wanted to pass forward a terrific poetry resource, which could be used by anyone supporting vulnerable populations, even parents with young children.

This is Julie Andrews and her daughter, their book called "Julie Andrews' Collection of Poems, Songs, and Lullabies". It is filled with rich, simple, poems, song lyrics, and imagery accessible and stimulating to those living with advanced stage dementia.

Enjoy and happy Read a New Book Month!

Sending very best wishes to all the kiddos and everyone supporting a child in getting back to school this week!

Whether kids are returning to learning in person or at home, this is a time of uncertain change again. If at any point it feels too overwhelming or stressful, think of a song that represents safety for you (and sing it to yourself, if this is comfortable) - it will send a message to the brain to reduce cortisol/the stress hormone.

Stay safe out there! xo

EmBE Music Therapy turns 15 years old today! And I'm just going to own it... this is one of the greatest accomplishments of my life.

It's been a journey for me as a music therapist, making a way through this pandemic. Being on "Covid Leave" from a full caseload of clients and contracts indefinitely... months passing... the uncertainty of how it all would work out for this practice... there were moments that felt very hopeless.

A few things became very clear in those moments of darkness: This beautiful work is a source of light in my life. This work is a source of great meaning in my life. This work is my legacy.

And so, how could I ever adequately thank you for that? To ALL of you... clients, business contacts, colleagues, therapists, family, friends, and of course, to music... thank you for continuing to support me - helping me, so that I can help others.

Sending much love,
Maryann
