Compassionate Creatures is one year old! And what a year it's been. Thanks for tuning in, and sharing us with the folks in your circle that may resonate with our care initiative.

Menstrual cycles. This is a conversation that has been stigmatized as "not safe for work". Let's start reversing that.

In animal care spaces, we need to be considering this in our check ins, conversations, and recognize this can guide our energy levels, inner critic, apathy, emotions, and how our bodies feel (pain!).

We talk so much about self-care, and forget to that this inner guide (the menstrual cycle) can help us to better understand our ever-changing care needs.

Thank you to those who continue to entrust me with their care. This is heart work and I'm honoured to be able to sit with you and explore the complex, wounded, and deeply grief-filled parts of your companion animal guardian experiences.

It's not about the species. It's about the value of the bond, and the ways these special relationships integrate into our every moment. 💜

Thanks to for being open to sharing my story! My navigation through the world of animal care to social work has been an engaging and intentional one.

I'm both thrilled and heart-warmed to be merging my worlds in a meaningful way, and supporting folks in broad animal caregiving spaces.

It's finally here, the wait is over! I'm glad to be able to share this sneak peak about how trauma-informed care is offered at Compassionate Creatures. The full webinar (16 minutes) is available on the website and dives into each of the sections in more depth, with focusses insights on supporting animal care professionals and companion animal guardians.

🔁I'm so grateful that I was able to blend my worlds as a practitioner and student to bring this to life. So, when you ask, "Brenn, what does trauma-informed practice mean to you?", I can say, "I have a video for that". ☺️

❗Although the full webinar was created as a course deliverable, it's important to share that the views expressed are those of my own and do not represent the views of the University of Calgary Faculty of Social Work.

If you have hung out with me for more than 10 minutes, you have likely heard me say "human-animal bond" or "veterinary social work".

These terms are truly at the heart of the work I do, and the passion that both keeps my flame burning (and burns me out).

The human-animal bond has shaped my life in truly monumental ways through personal, academic, and professional pursuits. I bring my own lived experiences and knowledge to the work I do, to offer supportive care and conversation to animal caregivers navigating various walks of life.

I am so glad to be on this path of care and growing Veterinary Social Work across Canada.

I'm so thankful for the network of care that exists in veterinary communities, so that clients in need of support are referred or can find me. It is an honour to sit with with companion animal guardians, holding their loss and deep grief, and letting them know that their loss is significant.

It is never "just a dog", it is always a family member, best friend, and reason for being.

Glad to share that our days are growing in vibrancy, activities, and with new humans!

If you would like to learn more about our integrative services and consider them for your own animal care team at a future time, visit our website and send us a message.

For now, we will be supporting, laughing, learning, and sharing joy and snacks with the teams on our roster.

Have you heard of Love, Baxter? We started following their mission in early 2025 and knew the network was needed in the companion animal guardian space. It brings together vast care services, resources, and information for guardians navigating difficult circumstances around the globe.

Right from the beginning of Compassionate Creatures, we have been part of the Love, Baxter network and have them listed on our website as an extensive resource to the community. Because that is what this work is about - building a community of care to wrap around guardians deeply hurting and navigating loss.
